LUTTED'S S. P. COUGH DROPS This auction is for a lovely vintage figural LOG CABIN piece known as'LUTTED'S S. P. COUGH DROPS" Which is made out of press patterned glass in a lovely emerald green color! This beautiful vintage heavy green glass container was used as a drug store display. The glass is very detailed with the raised glass on all sides that clearly show this is a log cabin structure. The top fits very nicely on the base and has a look of roof shingles. Inside the shingles are raised letters with the LUTTED'S S. P. Cough Drops advertisement. This covered cabin has 3 windows and a door. There are side handles and the structural base is supported by glass legs. The roofline lid is straight on the center chimney line and lifts off with ease. The interior is equally interesting with a pattern reminiscent of a hardwood ... morefloor or planked. It measures 6 1/4" inches tall. 8 1/2" inches long and 4 1/2" inches wide. The true original was considered quite the interesting piece of its time. The pattern is known today as Log Cabin but was originally called Pattern#78. It was made by Central Glass Company of Wheeling. West Virginia which introduced the pattern in 1875. James Lutted of Buffalo. New York was a leading candy maker and wholesaler of retail display cases and candy jars. The"J.L. cough drop was one of the biggest sellers and was displayed in a log cabin jar embossed with the company name, Lutted's S. P. Cough Drops. The piece is sought after by both collectors of early country store advertising and figural glass. Originals are almost always clear; colors of vaseline, blue and amber are known but are very rare. In clear, a jar in good condition usually sells for $400-450. This piece is a reproduction. How to differentiate a true item from reproduction? Here are the main differences between new and old. Vintage Log Cabin Pottery Mug, North Carolina, 1927-32
Log Cabin Pottery was located in Guilford County. NC and operated 1927-1932. This is a cylindrical mug. To the eye. It looks like a straight cylinder, but it does very slightly taper. The bottom is incised with the log cabin drawing. Size: 5.5” tall x 3.25” diameter at the top. And a smidge under 3” wide on the bottom Condition: Good. There are a variety of glaze pops and other imperfections from the original firing. There are several small flakes on the upper rim. Along the edge of the base, and three small flakes on the handle. The crack that appears in the close-ups of the handle seems to be in the glaze only, not in the clay– see photos 10, 11, 12. LOG CABIN SYRUP - MEDIUM SIZE - 2-1/2 POUNDS - VINTAGE (1920s) - METAL
When we purchased this wonderful LOG CABIN SYRUP container(many years ago) The dealer said it was the first of its kind made entirely of metal; previous early LOG CABIN tins had paper labels. A further indication of its age(probably the 1920s) is that it was made by THE LOG CABIN PRODUCTS CO, ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA. This was before that company was purchased by GENERAL FOODS CORP. The MEDIUM SIZE contents are"2-1/4 pounds net weight. They consist of"absolutely pure GRANULATED SUGAR AND MAPLE SUGAR. It's about 5" long. The condition. Considering the age, is very good. There is a dent on the front which does not cause an appearance problem. Paint loss is VERY MINOR, just a few pinpricks. The ends and bottom have a little surface"rust. The cap came with the container; it may not be original. As it is loose. The directions ... morefor opening are: Pull off cap by hand, turning and lifting at same time, cut out soft inner seal close to edge. To pour syrup- hold can on side. To close- replace cap.
