This is a vintage Kueffel& Esser Co(copyright in 1947) Log Log Duplex Decitric slider ruler in good condition. The slider ruler itself is in good shape but has discolored to a yellowish/light brown color. The metal peice show little to no wear. The slider piece is in good shape and it slides easily as does the middle piece of the ruler. There is a name engraved on the slide ruler as shown in the second picture. The case however has seen better days as both ends are missing but it does cover the slide ruler for protection from further damage. HANDWRITTEN MARITIME ACCOUNT BOOK Brig Betsy/Manuscript Ship Log/Ledger 1700s
FANTASTIC. ORIGINAL LATE 18TH CENTURY ACCOUNT BOOK OF THE"BRIG BETSY" This terrific early volume was compiled by ship's owner George Makepeace and captain Alexander Atwood. And chronicles the activities and voyages of the brig Betsy during the year of 1799. Carrying a variety of cargo, the Boston based vessel set sail for a host of tropical ports. Entries include"A Voige to the West Indies and Back" Disbursements at Turks Islands" Disbursements in the Havannah" i.e. Havana, Cuba] St. Thomas" etc. Also referenced are various parties engaged in business with the ship; with several pages bearing Captain Atwood's signature. Notably. Vessel had been captured the previous year by French pirates[i.e. privateers] operating in the Caribbean. During the French and Napoleonic eras. America was engaged in a"quasi" ... morewar with France which resulted in sustained maritime depredations on American commerce. Losses suffered by American ships and their owners at the hands of French privateers and other vessels were staggering. According to a report submitted years later(1827) by Secretary of State Henry Clay, some 444 vessels had been seized from 1793-1800 with losses totalling well into the millions. The brig Betsy, owned by George Makepeace and captained by Alexander C. Atwood, was one of the vessels seized by the French during this tumultuous period. The vessel and its cargo were reclaimed soon, after at considerable cost to Makepeace. The lingering and expensive issue was finally addressed by Congress in 1885 through the French Spoliation Act. Betsy. 140-ton brig, Alexander C. Atwood, master. Built in Massachusetts in 1785. George Makepeace, owner. Departed Boston on May 8, 1798, for St. Bartholomew with whale oil, shoes, lumber, candles, soap, and fish worth $1,907.76 and owned by Makepeace and Aaron Putnam in equal shares. I don’t know the type of wood. It has 5 spindles. Pin cushion, spool with very old looking thread. You're looking at 3/4 of a fab and funky and happy and folky Log Cabin"Barn Raising" quilt top(still with foundation on back side) that is an unusual size. 42" x 75" and was probably intended as a wall hanging or on back of couch or at foot of bed to brighten up the room, or for a day bed, miraculously still crisp and clean and dating to the 1940's. By hand. Lots of reds, lots of feed sack material, please note the feed sack material w/writing on it in last pic. I can't find even one flaw or bit of dirt or damage. In one of the pics is a bit of fringe peeking out from a throw underneath. From the"Dark Corners" area of Greenville County, S.C. where the moonshiners hung out until about the 1950's when revenue agents put an end to most of the stills. Perhaps the maker had been sipping a bit of home ... morebrew, for this is beautifully katiwampus in a couple of areas, all adding to the charm of this delightful piece of folk art from the American South. He is sitting on a cardboard log. One end is pushed in and I don't dare pull it out. The paper is so old and fragile. He has some of black paint on his feet for boots. Kinda feels like rubber. One has come off. Someone glued it onto something as there is some glue on the bottom of the log. There is a crack on the very bottom of the log. The log looks to be hand painted.
