For sale is what looks like a large roll of fuse wire perhaps. Whatever the wire is. It hasn't really tarnished in all the years Dad had it, so i assume it has a coating of maybe nickel or similar. Its most likely copper based. The reel is made from Bakelite and has the distinctive odor that this substance has. Has P.18 on it. I do not know the era but it has been in my Dads collection for decades. Very nice for the collector. I am not up with these items so it's a matter of you having a look at the pictures. Also Included is this fired zink time fuse adapter section that fits this piece as shown. Bormann Artillery Brass Fuse Wrench Dug
Rare dug fancy Militia or confederate Bormann fuse wrench that was dug in Savannah Georgia. The handle is made of solid brass{real heavy} and the bottom part is iron. The brass part was once plated and about 50% of the plating has worn off. It does not look exactly like the standard federal bormann wrench but fits the bormann fuse nicely The shaft coming out of handle has a slight bend as seen in photo's.It was dug with confederate block A's and two Chatham artillery buttons in downtown Savannah georgia back in 1992. Lead Seal for US Navy Watercap Fuse Adapter
Very difficult to find lead seal because these were generally pulled off prior to firing and tossed aside. These protected the fuse from moisture before use and also told the artillerist how long the underlying fuse was set to burn for. These are shown in Chuck Jones' book Artillery Fuses of the Civil War on pages 9-11. The pull tab on this one is broken off and has a slightly whiter patina than the round piece. That disc is marked"15 SEC" indicating the number of seconds the underlying fuse was set to burn. In the third photo is a picture of a different one of these in place on a watercap fuse. 1862 Dated USN Watercap Fuse Adapter, Stamped "R" for Reloaded
1862 dated US Navy watercap fuse adapter. This type of fuse adapter is shown in Chuck Jones' book Artillery Fuses of the Civil War on pages 9-11. Has the original watercap insert which easily screws in and out. Threads on fuse adapter are good enough to screw into a shell. Nice clean stampings. Aside from being in perfect condition. What makes this adapter special is the"R" stamp on it. You do not see that often. It signifies that this fuse adapter went into service(eg. out on a cruise) and came back to be re-loaded and sent back out. For your consideration Is this top fuse section from a 9- inch in diameter round Navy Shell that was 70 to 72 pounds. U.S. Only. The Navy's Heavy Artillery used this size ordnance with only 2 different patterns of this diameter of exploding shell. The size of the fuse channel with threads shows it had a Watercap fuse adapter in it& was likely a thin wall caseshot shell. Photos 1- 2- show it in as found condition with the heavy rust on it. The last photo is from the book, Artillery Fuses of the Civil War, by Charles H. Jones page 5, shows a great example of these heavy shells and the lifter tonges.
