Purina Hog Chow Butcher Knife marked Early Hammersmith Carbon Steel Hand Ground
This auction is for a butcher knife that is marked PURINA HOG CHOW on the hardwood handle. And is decorated with the familiar Purina checkerboard pattern. The blade is marked EARLY HAMMERSMITH 110 POINT CARBON QUALITY HAND GROUND. I wasn't able to find much information on the Early Hammersmith brand name, but they made an identical butcher knife for Remington, without the Purina checkerboard, but with the same mark on the blade. This knife has been left in"as found" condition. It has pitting on the blade, and wear to the checkerboard pattern on the handle. The blade has no nicks, and the brass rivets are tight and there is no wiggle. The total length of the knife is 11 1/2 inches, with the blade measuring 7 inches. This Purina butcher knife and the one made for Remington are the only blades I've found marked this way. 4 molds- One that looks like an arched bridge from 1989. Another that looks like the bottom of an old iron. That reads 1987. One that looks like a duck, 1990. And one that is cast aluminum that reads 1992. They all have the Pennsylvania word on them for'Groundhog Day' which is'Grundsau' Which is a pennsylvania dutch holiday. Very big here in Pennsylvania. All the molds are in great condition. No cracks or chips. I found these very close to Paxatawny, PA. They were used to make souveniers for groundhog day, and sold at the famous ceramony of Paxatawny Phil looking for his shadow.
