Vinatage Ceramic Harmonica Microphone Element HARP ELEMENT BONANZA! I'm cleaning some stock out of the shop. Among the goodies are a range of great harp elements. Here are some reclaomed late 70's/ 80's era hi-z ceramic microphone elements with really nice tone. Not overly aggressive. Just warm, textured tone. These hit feedback a couple ticks later than a hot Shure CR or Astatic MC-151. They are more similar in character and output to my ceramic MC-127 JT-30. The are very well built- sturdy housing and nice grill work and moisture screen. Width is a bit smaller than Astatic crystal/ ceramic(see picture- MC-151 is for reference only. I have actually used JT-30 gaskets in the past to hold these. With a bit of tape around the element for some extra width. I am happy to solder leads on these if you ask. Includes cord with proper amphenol connector(also rare) This mic works but seeing as it is the only one I have ever seen I have no basis to say how strong or weak output is. Harp Mic! Astatic JT-30 Harmonica Microphone with stand and base
Very clean Astatic JT-30 microphone with stand and base in great cosmetic condition. Element is 101 crystal with pretty good output. But due to its age and the fragility of these elements, I cannot guarantee it will last. It is a good mic if you have an amp that gets dirty too quickly and you want to dime the amp but still have toneful output. It sounds really nice through my 5 watt Oahu. Tag is adhesive type. Gasket still flexible. Wiring appears to be original, so perhaps element is as well. All in all, a nice mic as-is. The only reason I'm selling is because I have maybe a few too many mics. This mic survived and still works. As a vocal mic, it sounds ok and can sound half way decent with EQ, but this mic is perfect for a harmonica mic. This old mic has an unstoppable vintage look and vibe for that blue feeling. The stand mount is still in fine shape with no crossed threads. The 3-pin Amphenol connector in the mic is fine but the threads for the collar of the connector are halfway gone. This is not a huge problem as there are several ways to work around this. Adaptors are available to convert the older connector on this mic to an XLR connection, but if you want to use the mic as is, it works fine. Valley Audio 400 Channel Strip/Mic Processor. Valley Audio Products also went by Valley People and Valley International. Their products were targeted for recording and broadcast. This particular item was intended for radio and TV broadcast but is seen somewhat commonly these days in recording studios. In fact the manual states"the 400 is not intended for use with musical program materials" Since I've received several emails asking how this thing sounds/works here's my experience with it; For tracking: I bought this used and used it to record drums when I needed more pre-amps. The pre has workable headroom. Not the most I've ever used, but workable. It sounds mildy colored and not very open, but good for electric guitar cabinets and drums- rack and floor toms especially. For tracking, I found it better to keep the EQ ... moreflat and instead EQ in the box or during mix down and also keep the compressor settings mild, just catching the highest peaks. It worked best for me with dynamic and ribbon mics. better than condensors. I used it on rack and floor toms with Shure SM 57's and also on guitar cabinets and they held their own to the other API style preamps I was using. It does well w/ screaming. Guttural male tenor range vocals(metal) and a dynamic mic.It does really well for lower male frequency spoken words material. Certainly, not my"go to" preamp, but it always worked for me when I needed more channels when I used it conservatively. During mix down; This thing does have some character. Especially the compressor. It can really smash things. I'd use it in parallel with the original signal to good effect and blended in to taste on snare or distorted guitar. A couple of times, the Mid channel EQ 2.1kHz sounded cool on snare drum. It can give things a cool"low-fi" mojo. The de-esser works very well. This is a fresh Gruning Audioworks rack of modules that were originally in an older. Large-format British Soundtracs console. The CP6800 was a professional quality studio board that had its own sound and its own following of ardent admirers. I removed the various bussing assigns and peripheral circuitry in order to fit them into a standard 19" rack as stand-alone mic pre-amps. The sound is fairly clean/transparent with just a touch of distinctive character(color) and the EQ section is very versatile and very musical. I will be racking many more of these in the future. They are excellent and very useful all-around pre-amps. Phantom power, pad, phase switch, and filter are on-board. These differ from the previous pairs as I have added balanced outputs and an adjustable-10dB loss to +18dB gain circuit. So yes. Here is an awesome sounding dual channel pre. Tone.sweet tone. I have used this on everything from vocals. Acoustics, amps, percussion, and it sounds soooo good. I recently shot it out against my UA 610 tube pre and I was shocked.it took me a long time of critical listening to hear the differences! This thing rocks.enough said. I am the original owner and it's been kept in my smoke free studio, in a protective rack since I bought it.around 2 years ago. It works perfectly and I can't find any physical blemishes.check the photos. The only reason I am selling this baby it is to support my new 1073 purchase. One thing I did discover is that if you push it way too hard and clip the signal into your converter the signal overdrives and bombs out for a second.I'm not sure if it was my converters or this particular pre.don't get me ... morewrong you can drive it like crazy and with an sm7 you'll have too: but I wanted you to know that if you hear all of a sudden"clip clip clip clip" just turn the amp down for a sec and then make sure your not excessively over driving your signal.it could have been the particular mic I was using too.just happened a few times.other than that.STELLAR. Vintage RCA BA-71B/72 mic pre-amps. Restored and ready.
Please go to my website gruningaudioworks dot com and read the recent testimonial by one of my clients who bought another set of these. I'm still on the fence about just keeping them. I was reading about RCA pre-amps and someone mentioned that practically the only difference between the BA-71 and the BA-72 was the output capacitor(C12) I have the manuals for both so checked and what do you know.there are a few minor differences. But the primary one is the 71 has a 100uF 25V cap and the 72 has a 500uF 30V(as I recall) cap. So.I ordered some 500uF 35V(an extra 5V for good measure) caps and installed them. Not a huge difference in sound, but a slight tightening of the mids for certain. These pres sound achingly good. I re-capped them and built them a nice fresh 2U rack( Gruning Audioworks) and they sound absolutely stunning. They have a ... morenice. Clean linear power supply, toroid transformer, and the original UTC input and output transformers. These also have Germanium transistors. As far as I'm concerned, you can find different but you can't find any better. Besides the gain control. Each channel has a phase switch, input pad, phantom power switch, and a +6dB switch: these modules have a jumper to add the extra signal.this makes it sound louder, of course, but changes the timbre slightly. I installed the switch so the user has the choice. The buffers for the meters are adjustable so one can expect them to be at least somewhat representative of actual output signal.
