Set of 6 HEAVY CAST IRON Vtg/Antique ACORN FINIALS Fence Gate Post Tops Caps 5" Beautiful set of 6 of vintage/antique metal acorn finials. I am not sure of the age but they appear to be quite old. I believe that they are cast iron. They are thick and heavy. About 3 pounds each. The finials are painted black and stand approximately 5" tall. The bases measure 3" x 3 1/4" at the widest point with the interior dimensions being somewhat smaller. There are screw holes at either end of the shorter sides to secure the finials to the top of a post. This fence post with Wood Pecker holes once held live oak acorns. The fence post is irregular and is 77 and 1/2 inches by 3 and 1/2 inches by 3 and 1/2 inches. All four sides have Wood Pecker holes. The wood pecker would come back for the insects at a later date to feast. The split rail fence post is cedar or red wood. Hand split in the early part of the 20th century. Until September 1, 2014 it hung off the ground next the replacement metal post. The cattle ranch it came from is in the foothills of central California east of Terra Bella, Ca. The first homestead rancher on this land fought over water nearby with his neighbor, one rancher killing the other“in self-defense" It spoke to me and it will speak to you.
