Tektronixs TDS644A 500Mhz 4 Channel Digital Oscilloscope with color display
This is a Tektronix TDS-644A 500Mhz 4 channel oscilloscope with color display. It has a sample rate of 2Gs per second. The color display is really nice in that it allows you to easily see your settings and readouts for each channel. You can even set the readouts to all kinds of colors. Don’t know why you would need that but you can do it. I got this from a friend who bought it off e-bay a few years ago and it didn’t work when he got it. I did some research and found that many Tektronix scopes suffer from surface mount electrolytic capacitors leaking on their analog board and causing the ACQ failure on the power up tests. I replaced ALL of the electrolytic capacitors on the analog board and then cleaned up all residual leaked electrolyte. I gave the board a good soak and scrub in alcohol. Then a rinse and scrub under the faucet, and then let ... morethe board dry in the sun. After installing the board and running the scope’s internal calibration routines it works well! The scope has far too many features to list. You can have data readouts(voltages. Periods, pulse width, frequency, overshoots, etc) that can be assigned to just one channel or any of the other channels. Makes taking measurements so much nicer. The cursor functions allow for time or voltage(and even both at the same time) differentials to be easily measured(no need to count grids and do math in your head) It even has FFT functions but I have never played around with those. You can even save setup configurations as well as record waveforms on the scope or save/copy them to the floppy. This is clearly the best scope I have ever gotten my hands on. In fact. Its actually overkill for my needs. I have another(lesser) Tektronix scope that works well for me. I have had this guy for a couple years and had a hard time deciding to sell it. But, there is another very expensive piece of equipment that I want for developing a gizmo I want to produce so I gotta raise bucks to buy it. It shows some signs of age and is out of calibration. It is missing the knob covers for the intensity. Focus, and scale illumination knobs. All other knobs and switches are present. When we first tested this model it was producing 2 images for each source.we managed to get this to go away however it still occasionally produces multiple waveform images on its screen when there should only be one. After it warmed up it started doing a better at reproducing our waveform from the input. It was not very good at reproducing low Hz signals.anything below 100Hz looked like DC Offset being turned off and on. Our conclusion? This machine is in need of a good calibration. Also passes the signal path compensation routine(SPC) as often as initiated. Bandwidth on all 4 channels measures to well beyond 500 MHz. Minor blemishes are present. All typical for a bench scope properly cared for. The worste blemish is to the left of the blue Tektronix logo on the front panel nameplate.The display is perfect. This one has option 2M(8M Max/2M Ch) 2A(Advanced Analysis) and is at Windows 2000 w/Service Pack 3. This scope does not have the thermal printer or touch screen options(if there is an upside. This does improve the displays appearance) You will want to use at a minimum a mouse with it(included in the top compartment) I like the small form factor keyboards with touch ... morepad built in. All controls function as intended on and on… It’s a nice scope. For comparison. This scope would compete with aTDS3054x of any generation. This scope would have a larger foot print on the bench, a bit more noisy, but the acquisition system on this scope is vastly more powerful, and is analytically presentation wise far superior as well. This oscilloscope uses a windows based motherboard to supervise a separate PowerPC board that manages a separate acquisition board. ALL of the heavy lifting is accomplishes with the PowerPC/Acquisition board(oscilloscope side) So the windows board is not heavily burdened as an oscilloscope and can run unrelated applications. Some scopes of this era were so called closed boxes(windows board/acquisition board only) un-approved third party software would crash them and was not allowed; and the interface during calculations could become halting. Still relevant. This scope was advertised to have a waveform capture rate of 100,000 waveforms per second, the DPO/MDO4000 are said to be 50,000 wfps scopes. And as you can see this scope can do temperature and spectral grading, to visualize the details. It fully supports the old P6
