Up for auction is a U.S. Navy Holtzer-Cabot OHMmeter ZM-14A/PSM-2. Insulation reader/tester checking for any resistance what-so-ever much and if any is there the insulater is deemed no good and replaced. This unit does work and cranks easily and the inside capacitor drains when leads shorted togather. Last calibrated in 1972. Short story: I am x Navy Radioman and served aboard USS Rockbridge APA228 1963-1966. The first thing/job a new radioman aboard this ship was to check the antenna systems and pronounce the insulators good. I used what was referred to as a"Mego Meter" but to get to those insulators one had to climb the center mast and or either the one in front or back and let the dipole wire antenna down to deck level in order to check the insulators. The second one I did as the insulator came down from above it carreened and ... morestruck me in the eye. I worn glasses and still do which were smashed and gave me a black eye. Then Ships were required to have one of these ohm meters aboard to read hopefully infinity on any insulator. Sea air and the water atmostphere made this necessary. No resistance and an infinity reading was the requirment. The metal cover has kept this meter in great shape and appears that the outside of the metal cover has absorbed a little sea spray and or air but it is still a-ok. This is a James G. Biddle Co"Megger" megohmmeter insulation tester. Estimated to be from the early 1980s, in working condition but without recent calibration. The tag on the back states that it is catalog#70147. But investigating the website(biddlemegger.com) I have determined that it appears to be the same as#21805 and a n owners manual is there to download. A hand cranked magneto supplies 500 volts through the leads and the readout is scaled from 0- 500 ohms(o hms side) and 0- infinity(megohms side) With a switch to set the reading. Leads and case are included. But the leather case is in rough shape, needed a re-stitch and general TLC. The leads are about 5 feet long an d in good condition. And the instrument its elf is clean. It is missing the small cover plate for the ohms/megohms switch but the info is hand written on the meter. ... moreOther than that. No markings or engravings. I used th is for several years while surveying yachts and doing marine electrical consulting work. Great for determining if there is insulation damage to hidden wiring. Testing high voltage circuits for leakage is too often a"hit or miss" operation unless you have a genuine load and feedback test metered device. Watching for pale blue sparks in a darkened environment is a time-tested method. Probing about with a grounded ice pick sort of tool is another. I've even known some fellows who don't seem bothered much by getting zapped with low amperage high voltage run their hand over secondary ignition leads to see if they have any leaks. But for factory authorized small engine shops. A genuine"Hi-Po" or High Potential electrical loading and testing device is considered more professional. Even though it may be less exciting. This can work on any brand of equipment. But it was sold through Toro's dealer equipment supply channel. Very nice piece to own and will retain its value for ... moremany years unless someone who should not be allowed in your shop gets hold of it. So I'll start it at a low but fair non-give-away starting bid. But way lower than its cost. Not everyone needs one of these. But for those who do and have decided to go independent rather than continue working for a dealer who has a properly outfitted shop. This would be an excellent shop addition that will make money for them and speed up finding high-voltage problems. I know this does not appear as though it would weigh much.
