Rare MARIN COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT USFS Vintage Water Canteen (US Forest Service)
Up for sale is a rare vintage U.S. Forest Service(USFS) water canteen that was made for the Marin County Fire Department. On one side is says"USFS" on the other is says"MC FD" which I believe is correctly Marin County Fire Department. I purchased this item in San Anselmo. Marin County and am very confident this was used by the Fire Department probably in the 1940s or 1950s. This water canteen is made of metal covered with canvas. The lid looks like it may be made of zinc like the old canning jar lids and still screws on tightly. It is in good condition. But the metal trim around the outside of the canteen is well worn and there is light surface rust. The strap is made of canvas and is fitted around the outside of the canteen with about a 24" drop. There is some wear to the strap as shown in the photos, but not all ... morethe way through. It measures about 9 1/2" in diameter and about 2 1/2" wide. 1960s Vintage LUTZ 4" Forestry Compass with Sights in Leather Case, Japan
Interesting old compass came with some Forestry Department surplus. 4" dial and several scales. Fold up sights with good wire. Basic function is good and it seeks north easily. Small knob on bottom locks needle. Level vial is cracked and dry. Vial assembly unscrews from bottom so you may be able to replace it. Adjustable for declination. Threads for mounting on a staff appear to be 1/2" very fine thread. Leather case has a place to hold mounting adapter but I do NOT have it. Up for your consideration is a vintage SuperLite Fibremetal aluminum logger’s hard hat that has two US Forest Service decals. There are three metal clips along the outside crown of the hat. But I have no idea what their original purpose was. The decals have a few scratches from years of use and the chippy leather headband has definitely seen better days. A few small pea size dents.
