Ferris Instruments Model 22A RF Generator (Ham Radio Test Equipment)
This item is an Model 22A RF Signal Generator built by Ferris Instruments Corp of Boonton. NJ, S/N 331. The generator covers a frequency range of 85Kc to 25Mc in 6 bands. It includes an internal modulator(modulation up to 50% and metering and an output attenuator that allows setting the output level down to 0-10 mV and up to 0-1 Volt. The generator employs a type 955 acorn triode as its oscillator, and the unit is operated from a gas-tube regulated supply. Construction is sturdy. The auction also includes an original manual for the instrument. The generator is in good cosmetic condition. Though not perfect. There are the usual scuffs and scrapes on the external paint, and the frequency dial has some stains and slight tears, though it is completely legible. The power cable is cracked where it exits the cabinet and should be replaced. While ... moreexamining the instrument I found the shield can over the output level control had come loose and was rattling around inside. Though I replaced it, it may come loose in shipping, so buyer please be aware of this minor problem. The manual is loose leaf, captured in a folder, and seems to be in good shape. There's a complete schematic on a large fold-out(see pix) Electrically. The generator seems to be fully functional. The pots and output attenuator switch could use some cleaning, but otherwise the instrument works as intended, as far as I can tell. See photo in which the generator is tuned to 1.0 Mc, and my slightly temperamental GR counter reports that its output is at 997 Kc, only 0.3% off. The modulator also appears to be working and can be adjusted up to 50% modulation. That is not bad for a 70-ish year old instrument! Payment by Paypal only. Please. Vintage Heathkit Capaci-Tester model CT-1 made in the late fifties in USA. The magic eye tube is nice and bright. Did a basic test with some old capacitors lying around and the unit is responsive- no further tests done. Metal case is nice but has a few spots with peeling paint. AC cord is original and supple. Up for auction is a tested and working EICO model 377 signal generator. To prepare this instrument for auction. I cleaned all switch contacts + the output level control with DeOxit. Rather than listing this item as untested. I decide to connect it to my‘scope to insure this is an operating unit. As seen in the photos. Both sine& square wave outputs are working properly. Specifications indicate sine wave output is 20 Hz to 200 KHz in four bands. Square wave output is 60 Hz to 30 KHz. With 5% tilt at 60 Hz and 5% rounding at 30 KHz. Output from the cathode-follower tube is approximately 10 volts into a 1000 ohm load(8 volts with a 500 ohm load) As seen in the photos. This generator shows rust& cosmetic wear, which does not affect its performance. And was used to test and repair their early tube type business band radios. These radios were very similar to early tube type Ham radios I have tested this unit and all functions seem to work. The calibration seems to be correct. This is a vintage type item. And the metal case has a hammertone ... moretype of finish that seems to attract grime in the nooks and crannies. The case could use a good cleaning, as it has sat on a workbench unused for many years. It is mounted in a STRONG METAL- CARRY CASE.
