Up for auction is a U.S. Navy Holtzer-Cabot OHMmeter ZM-14A/PSM-2. Insulation reader/tester checking for any resistance what-so-ever much and if any is there the insulater is deemed no good and replaced. This unit does work and cranks easily and the inside capacitor drains when leads shorted togather. Last calibrated in 1972. Short story: I am x Navy Radioman and served aboard USS Rockbridge APA228 1963-1966. The first thing/job a new radioman aboard this ship was to check the antenna systems and pronounce the insulators good. I used what was referred to as a"Mego Meter" but to get to those insulators one had to climb the center mast and or either the one in front or back and let the dipole wire antenna down to deck level in order to check the insulators. The second one I did as the insulator came down from above it carreened and ... morestruck me in the eye. I worn glasses and still do which were smashed and gave me a black eye. Then Ships were required to have one of these ohm meters aboard to read hopefully infinity on any insulator. Sea air and the water atmostphere made this necessary. No resistance and an infinity reading was the requirment. The metal cover has kept this meter in great shape and appears that the outside of the metal cover has absorbed a little sea spray and or air but it is still a-ok. What we have here is an instrument to measure the apparent resistivity of the ground. There are many widely different arrangements and equipment available to do this. This device falls under the method known as Gish- Rooney after the pair who devised it in 1925. The measure of resistivity in the field of geophysics is one of the oldest methods. This meter was probably made in the late 1950's to early 1960's. The Gish-Rooney meter is similar to an instrument called a Megger which was developed primarily for the use of power and communications companies to test the grounds of power stations and transmission towers. The Gish-Rooney meter measures the current and voltage separately to obtain the apparent resistivity which is somewhat more accurate than the Megger and more suitable to geophysical surveys. We recently upgraded to the Max 4000 Electomters and are getting rid of our old equipment. We've never had any issues with this electrometer and it has always worked so very well for us. This is battery powered, operates on 1 9V battery. You can plug in any probe and use it as part of your daily, weekly, or monthly calibration protocols. You have the option of running at at High voltage(300V) or Low(150V) This electromoter was last cross-calibrated against current ADCL calibrated Electrometer and Ion Chamber on May 11, 2010. I believe the small probe with metalic end is for temperature and the wire appears to have been spliced. final probe I really do not think it is in working condition. Nor what it is for. plastic caps on both ends of tube, Innards of tube do no look very good. and one endcap is on with masking tape and rubber band. Your guess is better than mine on this one. Probably garbage, but leaving it in and you can decided if you get this listing. Meter uses a 9v battery and I do not have one to test the unit. Buffers for calibration are out of date so would not be able to test any of this without a serious shopping trip. I did use at least some of these probes and the meter about 12 years ago.
