I inherited this from my Dad a few years ago. We spent a lot of time with this in his garage working on the $100 cars which we would fix up and he would drive for a very long time before getting another one. We had to add a huge beam up in the rafters to hold the weight. The heaviest motor we pulled was a 460 Ford. This hung on the garage wall for all the 43 years he lived there. There is no replacement for the old East Coast steel. Last year my basement flooded where I had this hanging and there is a bit of surface rust from the moisture. There is no physical damage other then the minor rust factor. I good old fashioned grease job and some use and it will look like it use to. I do not have a garage and I drive VW Vanagons which has the motor in the back. You have to use a picker to pull the motor or just drop it out the bottom. At this time they made three types of chain hoists and. Of this type, the screw type, they made eleven sizes, from 500 lb to 20000 pound capacity. A thousand pound capacity hoist cost $50 and weighed 72 pounds. An early type of'screw type' or'worm gear type' of chain fall. And the pattern is often called a'riggers' block' as it is lighter and easier to handle ... morethan is the'spur gear' type. The standard arrangement for the load hook was for it to be held in a'cross-head' which carried shackles for both load chains. The load chain was arranged so that the center of the load chain was centered between the load sprockets, dead-stopping the load chain when fully paid out. The cross-head for the load hook was shackled to the running ends of the load chain. We do not have the chain and you have to insure to use the correct one for the load sheaves. The load chain fits the pockets in the load chain sheaves. Find quality chain, not common chain and use the high grade specified for use in overhead lifting applications and one which fits the chain pockets in the load sheaves correctly.
