The Big Hole is still a bit frozen but if you have been wanting to fish here, it is should warm up over the next few days which should provide for some opportunities. Look for some ... morespring fed areas for fishable waters. While the browns have finished spawning for the year, there eggs lay dormant until the spring season so watch where you walk. We recommend fishing on the bottom with midge nymphs, cased caddis and mayflies. We also recommend stoneflies. Look for fish down deep in the middle of the river.

The Bitterroot River is fishing very well right now. In the mornings, the fish are down deep so keep your nymphs on the bottom. Using a grid, hit every inch as these fish are not moving ... moremuch in the mornings. Look for slow seams and bends. The Gallatin River has been fishing well with the forecast for a warm-up this weekend. This should provide even better fishing. The ice has been breaking up siring up food from the ... morebottom. This has been providing some good fishing. The open canyon and valley stretches of waters up to Big Sky are fishing very well. The winter stones are hatching so nymphing seems to be the best. Small black stonefly nymphs are working the best. It is best to jump from one deep run to another. Look for currents that are steady enough to bring food to trout yet not too strong.

The recent warming trend has melted the shelf ice making for some good fishing. You still have to watch out for ice in the water coming down stream. Nymphing is the way to go this ... moretime of year with the usual suspects for flies including stoneflies with a caddis or midge nymph dropper. A Pat’s Rubberleg and small red or black midge is another good option. With the warmer weather, we may see even better action in the coming days.

Winter is a great time to fish the Missouri River. The warmer weather has reduced the ice on the shores and should make for some great weekend fishing. Certain parts of the river, ... moreespecially from the dam to Craig produces ice free water because of the moderate weather. You should be looking for winter runs. As the weather warms, we may get some good streamer fishing. The fish are in the slower waters for the winter so look for convergence of seam lines and feeding lanes into it. Nymphing hot bead sow bugs with midge larva is a good setup. Some fish are starting to eat midges on the top.

The warmer weather has brought out the hatches and fish on the Ruby River. The Ruby tends to be a nice winter-time option as the winds are mild and the dams protect the waters from ... moreice shelves. Nymphing has been hot and we have seen some risers on Midge hatches. Small, non-descript patterns like Zebra Midges and RS-2s are consistent producers.
