When company's need the number crunching or processing power of a Cray Super Computer in a smaller foot print SKY Computers and Mercury Computer Systems had VME products to answer the call. Their original products used Intel's i860- 80860 processor. At its time the Intel i860 delivered the highest performance for the dollar but suffered from poor development tools. The compilers Intel provided compiled code as if the i860 was a scaler processor(i386 or i486) but it was a vector processor needing special consideration for instruction schedualing. Mercury and Sky delivered their products with properly designed compilers and math libraries fine tuned for the i860. Microsoft originally developed Windows NT for the i860. The most successful product to use the i860 was SGI's original Inifinite Reality Engine. With the mediocre success ... moreof the i860. Intel eventually dropped the processor line. Another lesson of you only get out of it what you put into it. Mercury and Sky had to find another processor before they lost their customers in a market they created. At the time the only other mass produced low cost processor with vector design and instruction set was the PowerPC with the Altivec extension the choice was obvious.
