Up for auction is this very interesting piece of vintage test equipment: a Hewlett-Packard Model 521AR Frequency Counter(the"R" is to denote the rack-mount cabinet configuration) The display on this unit is unique. With a set of 4"stacks" of the numbers 0 through 9, with a neon light bulb behind each digit. In operation the digits in each stack will very rapidly count up, then when the reading is complete one digit in each column will stay illuminated, indicating the frequency. Very cool! I shot a brief video of the unit in operation. Which can be viewed at: The manual says the frequency range is up to 220 KHz with"option 03" whatever that is. I'm sure it describes what"option 03" is somewhere in the manual. But I didn't see it. Max frequency without this mysterious option is 120 KHz. This is ... morea vacuum-tube powered counter. Not sure when the unit was built. But the printing date on the manual is 1967(although the copyright date is 1959) and I saw references to this model on the internet as early as 1955. So I guess the build date could be anytime from 1955 through the late'60's) Included are the counter itself, an input cable with the bnc connector on one end and a couple of alligator clips on the other end, and the manual, which contains operating instructions as well as maintenance procedures, circuit descriptions, and schematic diagrams of the unit. The unit appears to be fully operational(with one minor exception noted below) When I touched the input the display correctly read the 60 Hz AC in the room that my body was acting as an"antenna" for. And when I hooked it up to a frequency generator and slowly increased the frequency the counter displayed the frequency as approximately indicated on the generator's dial. The one operational issue is that the neon bulb behind the"5" digit on the left-most column does not illuminate. This is a very nice EIP/ Phase Matrix microwave frequency counter model 548B option 05 and 06. Option 5 adds the high stability ovenized time base. Option 6 adds the wide band input from 26.5– 110 GHz. It also has the GPIB interface port. I have owned and used this counter for a few years; it works very well, it will pass all the self-test routines, it is very stable, sensitive and accurate on all the direct input bands. HP 5370A Frequency Counter with Rubidium Clock Retrofit
Hewlett Packard HP 5370A Frequency Counter retrofitted with a FE5680A Rubidium master clock source and power module. The retrofit provides a clock source that's much more accurate and than the internal TCXO that is supplied with this unit. The TCXO is still available in the unit and the Rubidium system can be removed if one wants to restore the counter to its original configuration. The rubidium module has a small interface module that supplies appropriate power from the power module incorporated in the retrofit. See JPEGS to see how the rubidium module was mounted in the HP 5370A frame. The Rubidium Power Module is connected to the HP 5370A's AC filter/Fuse assembly and is powered continuously once power is applied by the supplied IEC power cable. Power to and from the power module is routed through large ferrite flilter beads and ... moretoroids. The JPEGs illustrate both the Rubidium module and the counter's display looking at another Rubidium Source.
