We got a bunch of similar telephone testing equipment in, but this one looks the best. I don't know how to operate this or what it is suppose to do. Plugged unit in and turned power switch to ON. The display screen showed CALIBRATION Power Calibration Was Successful, and was flashing off and on. There was also a bunch of red lights flashing on and off below this in the FEATURE SELECT and VALUE CONTROL area of the front panel. The STANDALONE and CALIBRATION red light were lit solid also. The AM401 is a PCM T1(not E1 or J) test set as well as an analog test set all in one. Do some research on the net to find out more. Basically this test set is a combination of many test sets you might use in the field. It is an analog TIMS(Transmission Impairment Measuring Set) capable of measuring DTMF. Tones, noise, s/n, return loss, ringing volts/hz, loop voltage, impulse noise, noise to ground, notch noise. Impedance settings from 135ohms to 1200ohms. Variable frequency and sweep is possible as well as pre-programmed tones and telephone mode so that means ... more2w or 4w or telephone behaviour in analog mode. It is also a T1 test set measures frequency, graphical pulse shape, bit errors(BERT TEST) as well as outputting PCM T1, manipulation and reading of ABCD bits per T1 channel. It is capable of much, much more. Two units make it very convenient for end to end testing. These two are in great working order. The touch screens work perfectly. The speakers and microphones work and back lights work. The displays are crisp and readable with adjustable contrast. The rechargeable batteries have long since died and have been removed from the units so unfortunately they no longer keep time or can be used without a power supply. Also. When i bought the units, they did not come with analog cables. Because the cables needed a special PS/2 style connector and Ameritec no longer supplied them(I called them) I broke out the connector internally and wired to a female RJ45 jack on the side of the unit. 2 custom cables are included with alligator clips(the yellow ones) for any analog connections. 1 pair TX, 1 pair RX per cable made out of off the shelf 568A/B cables.
