This auction is for a really scarce type 4735 water current flow metering device that is designed for use with a wading rod so as to measure the water speed at a defined height in a stream or other body of flowing water. Made by the NAKAASA company of Japan somewhere between 1947 and 1965 and essentially the same as the modern type USGS type AA current meters offered by the specialist USA firm Rickly Hydrological Company; I cannot find any trace of NAKAASA now and these are stickingly similar so maybe Rickly bought them out? Anybody who works in environmental or hydrological surveying will know what this contraption does and how to use it but essentially. It is a beautifilly made instrument in heavily chrome plated metal which has a rotating six cup wheel with an electrical once per revolution contact device to measure the speed of the water ... moreand a pivot and tailfin to allow it to always be in line with the direction of flow. It usually mounts on a wading rod which sits on the stream bed and so defines the height at which the water flow rate is being measured and it has a battery case accessory with a sounder in one end and two terminals at the other which. When connected together, make it sqauwk! This is connected to the AA curent meter's terminals and once per rev it beeps. There are other accessories in the wooden case including a base plate( which has an integral pulley. A rod mounted adjustable height pulley, a rod mounted adjustable height locking or safety device, a specially made cotton type miniature rope with end attachments for setting the measurement height and*automatically maintaining it, the terminal ended wire and even a jeweller's screwdriver to adjust everything. This device is made to a very high standard and the bearings. Supposedly of tungsten carbide( and other parts are nearly all adjustable. The tailfin can be detached if required. The label on the inside indicates the unit was treated for moisture and fungus resistance on Nov_ 1944 in accordance with Signal Corps Specification 71-22202-A dated 12 April 1944.
