Although it is not marked it does bear a canny resemblance to others that I have researched on the internet. A Brief History of the company- A G Thornton set up business in 1878 making and supplying quality drawing and surveying instruments and materials to engineers. Architects, ship builders, surveyors, local authorities and schools. They created a large national trade and extensive export business and were appointed as a contractor to Her Majesty’s Government. During the early years of the twentieth century Thorntons excelled in the design and development of new drawing equipment with many patents and design awards. This level has been stripped. Cleaned and polished to a high sheen finish. Some you see for sale have all there lacquer removed to show the brass of to its full extent this would be possible as this is a solid brass instrument. This instrument would make an ideal long service or retirement gift for an Engineer or Surveyor. Or put on show in an Engineering or Architects office. The instrument optics still focus and work, the cross hairs have been replaced and everthing works as it should and it still has its removable lens cap. It comes with the original box probably why it has lasted so long and is in such good condition, one of the hinges has seen better days and unfortunarly the key and leather strapping are long gone The instrument is not calibrated for use. But i see no reason why it couldn't be if you wished to use it as a working instrument. I live in sheffield and i bought this from a builders wife about 15 years ago he had been using it untill he retired, it has the name"Haywood" discreatly marked on its main body"someones name rather than a makers mark" I bought this complete with a 8ft wooden staff that i have for sale in a separate listing it would be nice to keep these togethe

Will keep on top of it however and should be able to Update as I learn. On it it says: San Francisco 940, And on the opposite side it says A. Lietz Co. Makers. I picked this up from a fellow about 45 minutes from San Francisco where this transit made. He had been a surveyor for most of his life, and this awesome transit was the focal point of his collection.

This is a vintage Keuffler and Esser surveyor's tripod. The tripod is designed to hold a transit level. The opening at the top of the column is 3 1/8" as seen in the photograph. Fully extended the legs are 60" and collapsed they are 36" The legs are 4 1/4" wide. Wood is in very nice condition. The black metal spikes on the bottom show wear from use and some rust. Steampunk decor lamp base art machine age art repurpose.

Tripod Adapter for David White Level-Transit Berger 5/8" x 11 to 3 1/2" x 8
This tripod adapter converts a regular 5/8"x 11 tripod to use 3 1/2" x 8 instruments. I was using this with a David White LT-8300 but I don't have that anymore and I'm not planning on buying another vintage transit. It will work with any vintage transit with a large base- sometimes called a mason jar base because of it's shape. It has only seen light use as the 8300 was a teaching aid and not in field use.

Vintage 1959 Keuffel & Esser Builders Transit Level, Wood Tripod & Measuring Rod
1959 Keuffel& Esser Builders Transit-Level Model No. NP5155 Includes 39 page Original Instruction Manual and Wooden Storage Case. missing sunshade and plumb bob) Seiler Instrument Co. Wooden tripod with wooden measuring rod. Transit level is in good condition with no scratches or marks from misuse. No scratches on lens or Eyepiece Wooden Tripod has a little white paint at top of two legs as seen in photos. Wooden measuring rods painted numbers have flaked off in some places. See photos. I am including the cost of shipping in my bid price. Packaging the transit level with bubble wrap in the wood box and the wood box with bubble wrap in a shipping box is not a problem for me but the packaging for the tripod and measuring rod maybe a little tricky. I prefer to use more packaging then necessary to keep items from being damaged. Bubble wrap ... morethen cardboard rap with packaging tape should be ok for the tripod and rod if it gets handled properly. I would be willing to do some other form of packaging on those items but there may be additional costs involved.

This is a great vintage surveying transit with the original dovetailed wooden box. Serial number 77122. The lock on the box box works and there is a key. One of the four small feet on the bottom are missing. The transit is in very nice shape and looks greart. I tried to clean the lens but it is still blurry. Lietz hand held transit surveying level sight in leather case w/ belt loop
Lietz hand held level of some sort. This is not my area of expertise. So I have seen it called a transit sight, a surveying level, and several other things. Only identification I see says Lietz on the side. I can't find a number or anything. Measures 5" long. 7/8" diameter. Good physical condition. No dings, dents, just some of the black finish has rubbed off near the level on the outside. Seems to work fine, but since I'm not certain how to use it, that makes it difficult to swear to. Leather case has some wear. But in good solid condition, snap works fine.

Up for auction is this transit I believe manufactured by the John W Queen& Co. company out of Philadelphia. It is clearly marked Queen& Co. This piece is in working order as far as I can tell. The lenses are aged but do show images but I did not attempt to focus or adjust it in any way. Please see all images. The scope as pictured is 8 3/8" long and aprox. 4 3/4" tall. A used. Vintage, David White Transit Level, with original wood case(missing leather carry strap) and instruction booklet. Marked# 70323. This appears to have all of the"bells and whistles" as far as adjustments go. Has the brass cap for the end(as seen in pics) has what looks like a"sunshade" for the end of the scope. Spectra-Physics. Model 1051 Surveyor's Transit Level Tripod This is a used SPECTRA-PHYSICS Model 1051 surveyor’s transit tripod. The legs are very strong tubular aluminum. With wood extension legs and the head is very solid. The legs measure 43” in the retracted position to the top of the mount, and will extend to 70” This tripod will fit the Wild Heerbrugg T1 and other transits. If you want a transit to go with this tripod. I have a nearly perfect Wild T1 on an auction that will end about five minutes before this one. The tripod is in very good condition structurally and functionally. If cosmetics are important to you. You may want to repaint the legs, which have a lot of scrapes, scratches and abrasion marks. Wild Heerbrugg T1 Swiss Surveyor's Transit Level Theodolite This is a used. But nearly perfect, WILD HEERBRUGG T1 Swiss-made surveyor’s transit. I bears serial number 275098. The transit is in excellent. Virtually new, condition. I can find no damage or defects of any type on the transit. The optics are superb and clear from edge to edge. The carry case has numerous scrapes, scratches and abrasions. This is the best protected precision instrument I’ve ever seen. The transit sits inside a metal shell which sits inside a foam lined heavy plastic carry case. If you need a tripod to go with this transit I have a Spectra-Physics Model 1051 tripod on auction that will end about five minutes after this auction. This is a truly awesome precision instrument!
