Antique SCLEROSCOPE/ Metal Hardness tester, 1924
This is a great antique scleroscope. A scientific device used to test the hardness of metal. Made by the Shore Instrument& MFG CO, New York. The latest dated patent on it is 1924. It's numbered 6251D. Engraved on this piece is DOP 12068. Date of purchase maybe? Research on the Shore Instrument company provides this information" The Scleroscope used a diamond tipped"hammer" Held within a glass-fronted tube that fell, from a height of 10 inches, onto a test specimen. The rebound of the hammer was measured on a graduated scale of"Shore" units, each divided into 100 parts that provide a comparison with the rebound that might be expected from hardened high-carbon steel. The hardness reading is technically a measure of the material's elasticity. One significant advantage of the Scleroscope was its’ non-destructive” ... morenature in that, unlike the other available methods of hardness testing at the time, a Scleroscope left only a slight mark on the material under test making, presumably leaving it available for use after evaluation. This is a"found" item. So I don't have much more history on the background. What I can determine is that this is not complete on a few levels. It seems like some examples have a bulb that accompanies it, this one does not. This is missing the glass on the dial area. Also, and most importantly, the hammer used to test the hardness is missing. You can see some damage on the underside where the hammer would have come out. I would consider this a piece for restoration or a cool"man cave" decorative item for a scientist. This item weighs just over 20 lbs. Shipping to US addresses only. Model: 1800-5100TA. This machine powers on, but it has an issue with the controls. The control panel powers on and I can switch between the two method settings, Rock Well Superficial" and"Rock Well" but I cannot switch switch between the"high" low" offset" indenter" ... moreor"method" settings. I know for sure that this is not a problem with the actual control panel because I had another working 5100T machine and was able to troubleshoot. When I switched the control panel from this machine to a known working machine, I am able to access all of the settings. When I took a known working control panel and put it on this machine, it does not work properly and I am only able to switch between the"rock well superficial" and rock well" method setting. The problem is not the control panel, it must be something else. When I push the start button i can hear and see the motor in the back move like it normally should, so I am assuming that the machine should work properly if you can fix the problem with the settings selection. There are some scratches on the unit from normal use and the plastic trim around the conrtol panel is dented in a couple of spots, but overall it is in good shape cosmetically. It is based on the'Diamond Pyramid' test, the load being applied by means of a hand wheel. On removal of the load the diamond(or whatever stone in question) is measured in the same manner as with the normal Vickers Technique. Overall in very good cosmetic condition. You would need a new 4.5v battery pack or power source to use the illuminating bulbs. The lenses could probably do with a good clean too.
