BIOGRAPHIES: James Melvin"Jimmie" Lunceford(1902–1947) was an American jazz alto saxophonist and bandleader of the swing era. Comedy and vaudeville played a distinct part in Lunceford's presentation. Despite the band's comic veneer. Lunceford always maintained professionalism in the music befitting a former music teacher. This professionalism paid off and during the apex of swing in the 1930s his Orchestra was considered the equal of Duke Ellington's, Earl Hines' or Count Basie's. William'Willie Smith' McLeish Smith(1910-1967) was one of the major alto saxophone players of the jazz swing era. He also played clarinet and sang. He is generally referred to as"Willie Smith" He began his career in 1929 when he joined the Jimmie Lunceford's Orchestra. He quickly became among the bands main stars. His success with Lunceford lost its charms by 1942 however when Smith and Lunceford clashed over money. Smith went on to play with several other orchestras. Including Duke Ellinton, Harry James and Nat king Cole. In the 1950's he began a distinguished solo career. Joe Thomas(1909-1986) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist. He played with Jimmie Lunceford's band from 1933 until Lunceford's death in 1947. Where he soloed often and occasionally sang. A top-of-the-line horn in its day, they are still sought after by players looking for the unique sound they offer. The original lacquer is about 90% intact. With a few wear spots up near the neck receiver and some very light scratching. Very minor dents, tiny pings really, on the bow, body and neck. Maybe half a dozen spots at most. Nickel plating on the keys is fine, except for a wear spot on the octave lever touch point. Some gray“hazing” on the nickel, it can be buffed off if you like. Pads are a mix of newer and older. Double-socket neck fits well. Horns plays right down to low Bb as is, but you may want to have your horn tech go over it and replace a few pads, reseat others. Set it up the way you want it. Tone quality is classic 10M: big, fat, warm and round. It's the reason we still want to play these vintage horns! A unique, professional saxophone at an affordable price. This is a vintage round chambered hard rubber Geo M Bundy 3 tenor sax mouthpiece with a 0.075" original tip opening and facing. This blank is different and much better playing than most Geo M Bundy's. It plays similar to a Link due to the nicely formed medium round chamber. The four rings on the shank also identify this type of blank. It plays quite well as is. With the relaxed sound of 50's tenor like Sonny Stitt. This saxophone is a wonderful example of the excellence of the Selmer Mark VI model made in France between 1954 and 1974. Widely regarded as one of the best saxophone models ever produced. The Selmer Mark VI has been a favorite of several top performers, including Michael Brecker. I used this saxophone in college many years ago as my'concert horn' that I would bring out for special occasions and competitions. It has been well cared for. Maintained, and loved over the years. My tech looked it over and I had him do 3 things. 1 new neck cork 2 Take out a dent in the bottom bow. With his 46 years of experience he did a fantastic job. I think he went in from the tone hole and down the body/bell etc to make it almost look perfect. see pics 8 10 11 12) 3 The neck screw needed to be a bit tighter. My tech commented that the rods on the pants side of sax don't even show any wear. see pic 11) this is real nit picky but I noticed in my pic 7 one of the rods is bent ever so slightly. Vintage '80s Conn 16M Tenor saxophone, USA ~ Armstrong stencil
Here's a real solid horn and quite an interesting one at that. Before proceeding. Please review our payment instructions under the payments/shipping tab above. Yes. We ship internationally, and yes we have a return policy, stated there. This is a Conn 16M model. Made in the USA by UMI. This is NOT a Mexico-made 16M. The first of these we have ever come across. We see plenty of 16M Mexico horns stenciled by Conn for Armstrong in the'70's. Then Conn. Armstrong and King were bought by Danny Henkin who returned all production to the USA and then later sold to UMI, which produced horns here domestically from'85-03 under the Conn, King, Armstrong, and Artley names. Now. The interesting thing about this horn is.it was always assumed that when production returned to US soil, the 16M model vanished, replaced by the Conn 22M and its ... morestencils. Most Armstrong horns of the UMI period are JK-inspired designs, such as the 3040 model; completely different beasts than a 16M. But this clearly has a late 80's UMI serial number. And not only does it LOOK like a 16M, we took calipers to the horn, and indeed it is a 16M design. Manufactured in the USA. Who would have thought that this spec survived so late in the game? BTW, the 16M bodies were always identical to the 10M bodies, thus the horns sound identical. All of this may be more info than you wanna know, but we at 2ndending.com love delving into the history of the old makers.we learn something new quite often. Like the fact that 16M's were made in America in the late 80's! UMI made a good run of horns in their time. They competed quite successfully, toe to to with the Japanese for two decades. W ell-built and sturdy. Many of their models still retained that big, wide, dark tone of the classic horns of the'30's-70's. This one sure does, since it's an identical spec to a 50's or'60's 16M. You're looking at a vintage Holton 241 Tenor Sax. This horn has been well used. But it is definitely functional. All the keys work, with the exception of the top left thumb button. If you look in picture#5, the top of the bar is broken off. However, it looks like it can be fixed, and only affects one note. Some of the keys are a little sticky, but that can be fixed. Up for auction is a classic 1956 Conn 10M"Lady Face/ Naked Lady" tenor saxophone. Made in Elkhart, Ind. It's a very solid horn in great condition. The majority of the lacquer remains intact. The bell engraving is clear and crisp. The tarnish gives it a nice vintage look. The inner bow is dimpled with small dents/dings. There is less than a handful of dings throughout the remainder of the body- nothing I would call a dent. The double socket neck of these later"Lady Face" 10Ms is really cool and in great shape. I find it to be quite striking with its uniqueness- beautiful brace and fascinating neck flat spring setup, only seen in these models. The sax plays beautifully. The pads are in great shape and seal perfectly. The action is quick and light. The intonation is spot on. Here is an excellent 1966 Buescher"400" tenor sax that plays beautifully. Top to bottom note. It has original lacquer, all Buescher snaps and pads, amber rollers, Norton threaded springs, genuine nickel plated keys and rods, removable low B and Bb key guard, and tear drop neck strap attachment ring. Felts and corks are good. Intonation is excellent and the tone is deep and warm with just enough"edge" to be interesting. It shows beautiful engraving. Comes in a vintage Buescher case that is in good condition. Now- the horns blemishes, and there aren't many. There are minor scratches at the base of the horn. There are small areas where dents were professionally smoothed and that aren't visible from more than a couple of feet(see pic) There is a small spot of lacquer loss at the bell and minor marks at the low C guard ... morefeet. Schill Tenor Saxophone Like new! My dad is a former world class woodwind proformer. He had a stroke about six years ago. I purchased the sax so he wouldn't have to risk bringing his Selmer's to the hospital rehab. He played it a couple of times and never played it. When you have a Mark 6 it's kind of hard to blow a Schill. This is a good horn for a up and comer.
