Vintage Pair General Electric RF Transmit Tubes This auction is for a Vintage pair of GE GL4125A or 4D21 Tubes. As far as I can tell these are a factory pair and have either never been used or used very minimally and returned to the box. Still with all original boxes and packing. Even shipping label. A mainstay in early FM transmitters these tubes can operate up to 120Mhz as a class C amplifier. The GE publication HAM NEWS(sept 1948) has plans for an ECONOMY HALF KILOWATT using a single tube which can loaf along at 400 watts or push to the limit 500 below 30Mhz. Of course they were talking about CW operation and sure you could easily build an amp with a less troublesome tube but where is the fun in that and where are you going to get a factory pair of 4D21's which are essentially new! A person who does weak-signal work or moon bounce work would want this amplifier as well as businesses. Airports, and research orgs doing VHF wanting as a spare unit. Very hard to come by full-limit amps at that frequency. Two caveats: Requires a hefty power supply of 1500-2000 volts. Parts are expensive but not a bank-roll killer. Also requires controls to run it(see the little black box with pins in the bottom right of pix 7) Manual and parts should be available from Motorola(Mot = Motorola) but also expensive. But once you've got/built the power supply and built/acquired a control box. You've got an absolutely primo amp. For Sale.Collins 30S-1 Round emblem. This amplifier belongs to a friend. I have checked the amplifier and made some repairs. The bias supply was rebuilt. It had no power supply tubes replaced with instant heating 3B28 tubes, and we the replaced the delay time relay for high voltage with a shorter delay time. It powers up and has power output. All meter functions work as intended.The supply voltage 6 VAC adjustable. The HV is 3000 vac for SSB. The is some minor damage to the cabinet from shipping around the country. the pictures show this on the left side of the amplifier cabinet. On the power supply cabinet cabinet the is a small rub spots in the upper left Conner running down to the lower part of the cabinet The key was not available and was drilled out by someone not by me and could be opened by screw driver. Hello and thanks for looking. Unfortunately this amplifier is being sold for parts or not working. This is because 3 weeks ago this amplifier was sent to a packaging/shipping shop and they did not pack it correctly. It was damaged and returned. Of course the packaging store will be paying for it. I brought it home and removed the damaged parts and here is what's left. It's pretty much complete other than a few parts. List below will be the parts that was damaged. 1) Tune variable capacitor(physically not damaged other than the plastic insulators. 2) 2 rods that connected the tune and load knobs to the variable cap. like dow rods) 3) Black end caps on front panel. The dials and knobs are in the bag. Just had to remove to remove the broken parts. The RF Parts 3-500zg seems to be intact. Bid as they are for parts or not working cause ... morewe haven't tested them. We did BUBBLE WRAPPED when we shipped the amplifier and they do look like they are in working condition but no guarantees. They will be BUBBLE WRAPPD extra good when I box up the amplifier. Front panel has minor damage including the top cover. It was not caved in. Everything else seems to be ok but it hasnt been tested. The transformer it's self retail is over $500. So if you need any parts for this Centurion this is the place to get it. All the screws and front knobs(extra parts) is in a bag including the variable capacitor. He was a loving father and ham for many years and unfortunately has passed away recently. 0( Pops lived and breathed ham radios most of his adult life as a career and hobby. He worked for Motorola for 14 years servicing and repairing various radios with a total of 45 years industry experience. EXACTLY what you see in the photos is what's included. This unit has been stored in dad's temperature controlled storage facility for"X" number of years. There are signs of"shelf sitting" on the exterior but the interior looks shiny and new. I have no idea how to test the unit. The last photo shows how my dad had it labeled in the box it was so carefully packed in. Due to my ... morelack of amateur radio knowledge. I reached out to a long term ham friend remotely(thanks Bob) to see if he can add some insight to help me describe this unit. Here is what he had to say: This is an immaculate full-limit(1500 watts easy) amplifier useable for the 2 meter ham band. A person who does weak-signal work or moon bounce work would want this amplifier as well as businesses. Airports, public safety authorities, police or research orgs doing VHF wanting as a spare unit. Very hard to come by full-limit amps at that frequency. Two caveats: Requires a hefty power supply of 1500-2000 volts. Parts are expensive but not a bank-roll killer. Also requires controls to run it(see the little black box with pins in the bottom right of pix 7) Manual and parts should be available from Motorola(Mot = Motorola) but also expensive. But once you've got/built the power supply and built/acquired a control box. You've got an absolutely primo amp. Here is an opinion/observation from an RF Commercial Tech: This would be adaptable to 2M with enough work. This unit was tested with a QRP unit with an output of only 10 watts max. With the 5 to 10 watts input it will develop 50 to 100 watts out nicely. If you adjust the boost you can get 150 to 200 watts. Any thing over that may cause spatter or distortion. Tested it on CW/SSB. Did not try it on AM. Don't think the receive pre-amp is working. The tube has been out os service since the 70's and the filaments are fragile on this tube. It was last used as a plate modulated final by an old ham who is now a SK. I acquired it from his estate and he had put it back in the box and marked it with pencil, along with his call sign.
