This is the hard to find ½ gallon yellow can from the late 50’s or early 60’s. It measures 8” tall to the top of the handle. A tad over 5” wide, and is 3 ½” deep. This is not perfect; one side has several scratches but the other side has just a couple of small nicks and displays nicely. Each end has a tiny divot in it that are only noticeable if you are looking for them and there is a small ding in ... morethe top of the cap. There is some light surface rust inside on the bottom. This wonderful piece of maple sugaring history has wonderful colors and graphics that are not faded. No repairs or splits could be found. Other than the scratches on one side this is in good condition compared to most of the old syrup cans I have seen here in Vermont. This beautiful can came from a very old farmhouse in the mountains of Vermont that belonged to the same family for generations. Selling is a wonderful antique copper tube thermometer with a handle on one side and a glass window showing the thermometer. The base is 3" in diameter and the tube is 8 3/4" tall. This is entirely copper made with a great patina. Attached to this tube. And part of it, is a long rectangular face where the thermometer is visible. The thermometer has a mercury bulb and is working. This thermometer is mounted on looks like an ivory ruler type plate 7/8" wide. There are black numbers, letters and a name stamped or engraved on this ivory plate or gauge to the thermometer. The letters on the ivory is faint but the name looks like" G. Just in time for the Sugaring season. Here is a vintage maple syrup thermometer advertising the Vermont Farm Machine Co. Bellows Falls VT. At the bottom of the thermometer is stamped the makers name WILDER, Troy, NY. The thermometer had a graduated scale and notations for different products; SYRUP, TUB, CAKE stamped upon a brass type metal, which is attached to the hardwood paddle. The thermometer is approximately 13 inches long and about 1.5 inches wide. There is hole at the top for hanging, and someone wrote in pencil on the back Mar 17, 1921. Please email with any questions. Used Marine Products Model R11 Naval bronze/brass pump with stainless steel shaft. This pump is 1-1/2" X 1-1/4" X 4" impeller. I do not have hard flow data. But at ~1500 RPM and depending on your hoses and lift arrangement, should pump 20-30 GPM. If primed and used with a foot valve, it will lift out of a barrel with no problem. My father bought this un-used in the 1960's from and Army surplus store. It may have been designed as a bilge pump. I rigged it up to pump sap in the 1980's. And used it for 3 or 4 seasons until I got all my trees on a gravity system. I used it with a 3-1/2 HP Briggs engine as displayed in photos. NOTE: The engine is just for display and DOES NOT come with this but I am including the base plate. I put a brand new bearing in today. And it is ready for work! Maple Syrup Tree saver taps (4) with 24 inch drop tubing
Up for bid is a starter tapping kit which includes the 5/16th inch tree saver taps and 24 inches of tubing attached to each. To make your syrup. Tap the tree about 2 feet off the ground, and run the tubing into a bucket. I like to use food grade plastic buckets which you can get from a restaurant or cafeteria. I then drilled a hole in the top and friction fit the tube ending in there to insure sap in perfect condition! Syrup can easily be made by a beginner using and outdoor turkey type fryer pot and heat source. Pour finished syrup in canning jars at 200 degrees and let them seal. Good luck! Syrup season is late this year and there is still time to tap and get some of your own home made maple syrup! Syrup makes a great gift or is a great alternative to store bought syrups and sugars. Great activity to do with the kids!
