First Snow of the Year: Fly Fishing the Upper Sacramento Now a Winter Game

December 3, 2007, by Tom Chandler 8 comments

It’s about time. A good six inches of snow — and some seriously high winds — fell upon Trout Underground World Headquarters yesterday (Sunday), though if you lived farther down the Upper Sacramento River canyon it was raining instead of snowing.

windysnow
A half-foot of snow and gusts to 35 mph made it a good day to stay inside.

Right now (Monday), it’s raining again, which means a lot of formerly white, fluffy snow is going to melt and run into the river. The long and short of it?

If you were planning to fish the Upper Sac this week, keep an eye on the flows. They could hit the “I’m just out here for the casting practice” levels in a hurry.

The Winter Game on the Upper Sacramento

To a fly fisherman (namely myself), the first big snowstorm also marks the transition from fall fishing to winter fishing, and the difference isn’t as subtle as you’d think.

While the big October Caddis dry might still draw strikes, the dry fly game from now focuses almost exclusively on the BWO hatches.

That’s not to say you can’t score heavy fishing summer-sized patterns; during the Upper Sac’s first winter season, Wayne Eng clued me into a stellar dry fly bite. The trout were sitting in knee-deep water along the bank, and I caught a lot of them on a #12 Beetle Bug dry — a method I’d have sworn was a waste of time during the winter.

I haven’t experienced a similar bite since then, but that doesn’t mean it won’t happen again.

Hope, after all, is one of the pillars of fly fishing, and if you don’t believe your next trip will be as good as your best day on the water, then pretty soon there won’t be a next trip.

Still, dry fly success now mostly involves uncasing those technical fly rods, longer leaders, smaller flies and warmer fishing gear.

That isn’t a huge surprise, but the timing changes too; now you’re normally fishing through the middle part of the day, and the morning and evenings are flat tough.

Fortunately, with the days running short, the mornings and evenings aren’t all that far apart.

Meanwhile, At Trout Underground World Headquarters

Our new digs in Mt. Shasta now feature the “Winter Wonderland” look (assuming a Winter Wonderland includes one very wet, very happy Wonderdog).

The New Trout Underground’s World Headquarters Dry Fly Flotation Test Lab is closed for winter.

This means that fly tying season is firing up, and we’ve got a couple interesting surprises headed your way. Sure, my fly tying stuff is still hiding in one of the boxes filling my office, but that won’t last forever. At least, I hope it won’t.

Until then, see you (in winter clothing) on the river, Tom Chandler.

The Trout Underground Launches Catch.com — The Online Dating Service For Fly Fishermen (Free Book Too)

November 30, 2007, by Tom Chandler 36 comments

The Trout Underground announced the launch of Catch.com — an online dating service aimed exclusively at fly fishermen (and fisherwomen) who are basically too pathetic to get dates the normal way. Genius, baby. Genius.

Fly Rod & Reel Details Dangers of "Wise Use" Movement – The Same Folks Pulling Strings in Siskiyou County

November 29, 2007, by Tom Chandler 2 comments

You won’t find me singing the praises of most of the mainstream fly fishing magazines, but one clear exception is Fly Rod & Reel, who have the guts to run whatever no-holds-barred Enviro Writer Ted Williams sends them.

image

In the current issue (January/February 2008), Williams does a masterful job of exposing the “Wise Use” movement — the same folks supplying the juice behind the temporarily derailed Siskiyou County Natural Resource Policy.

Of course, that’s same policy that tried to take away your legal right to access and Siskiyou County’s rivers. And yes, that’s the same policy that was eviscerated by several hundred e-mails from the Undergrounders.

There’s no online link to the Williams story, so if you want to see who’s really behind the attempts to kill your right to access public waters, you’ll have to buy the magazine.

Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch

And while we’re throwing props the way of the dead tree media, California Fly Fisher ran a news item about our battle to beat the Siskiyou County Natural Resources Plan. Good on ‘em.

Sadly, this whole matter is far from dead; a certain unpopular-with-fly-fishers County Supervisor has said she’s not much interested in getting public input on the Natural Resource Plan, and that she’s convinced there’s no legal basis for public access to the Scott and Shasta.

In other words, it ain’t over yet. I suspect they’ll try again, only this time, they’ll know the world is watching.

Better refine those mad letter writing skills, Undergrounders. Bet we’re going to need them.

See you on the river, Tom Chandler.

The Quickest Way to a Man’s Heart Is… Through His Head?

Alert Underground Reader and Mega-Babe MK represents something of an enigma to the Trout Underground’s Online Matchmaking Division.

After all, she’s a rep for loads of killer outdoor products, a monster kayaker and a total outdoor babe. Given the largely masochistic, “beat me whip me” nature of most fly fishers, her paddling skills alone should provoke a stampede of panting, slightly hunched fly fishers to her door.

Not only has she displayed excellent literary taste by posting on the Underground, but she even sent the extremely big-brained types here some fly fishing winter caps:

hats
These will keep us warm while we fish the largely vacant Upper Sacramento — making them one of the rare fly fishing gifts capable of performing a useful service.

So — and given her single, babe-alicious status — the riddle is this: What the Hell is Wrong With All You Upper Midwestern Fly Fishers?

Naturally, abject speculation by the rest of the Undergrounders is encouraged.

If They Can Put Booze in Ski Poles, Why Not the Reel Seat of a Fly Rod?

November 28, 2007, by Tom Chandler 10 comments

So why the hell hasn’t anyone built a flask into the reel seat of a fly rod? Skiers now have ski poles that hold booze, why not fly fishermen?

Turkey, Big Bugs & New Houses: Which Occupied More of Your Time?

November 26, 2007, by Tom Chandler 4 comments

The Holidays aren’t known for their fishing friendly nature, and with guests showing up and the Trout Underground World Headquarters still not fully unpacked, this Thanksgiving wasn’t an exception.

Still — hearing reports that the dying October Caddis bite was on, I snuck out yesterday afternoon.

For apparently no good reason.

It’s tempting to roll out all the usual fly fishing excuses (full moon, unstable barometer, alien presence, bad aura), but in truth, I only fished for a couple hours, and did so in a pretty half-assed fashion. I even forgot the digital camera (and I still haven’t located my Optio W10 after the move).

Three fish took a swipe at the big dry (I fished the Cantara Tanker), but either they weren’t serious or I was slow, and the day got colder and then it was over.

And yes, it has been colder up here — the new Trout Underground World Flotation Testing Facility (a small pond in the backyard of our new house) has been icing over — almost to the point that the Wonderdog can’t break through for his drink of water.

Winter is hard on everyone.

What’s Coming at the Underground

Still, there’s more October Caddis fishing still to come, and we’re always on the lookout for the BWO hatches. With partly cloudy skies on tap for the week (possibly rain on Thursday), I’ll probably be

Plus, I’ve got a couple more book giveaways teed up, and yes, lots of interesting news about evildoers our friends Nestle and PacifiCorp.

And yes, I’m working on a couple of time-consuming projects, but I haven’t forgotten the Undergrounders. More good stuff on the way.

See you on the river, Tom Chandler.

The Unkindest Cut: The Underground Undone by Chile Verde

November 21, 2007, by Tom Chandler 1 comment

I make what is likely the best chile verde ever produced by a leading fly fishing blogger — a distinction that no doubt fills my parents with pride.

Sadly, chile verde requires pork chunks, which requires cutting, which requires a sharp knife, which raises the specter of self-inflicted damage.

In simplest terms, the chile verde turned out great; my thumb… not so much.

Naturally, the timing couldn’t be much worse; the “killing cold” nights are finally settling in, which means what’s left of the October Caddis are dying, and the trout are eating the big bugs.

I had to bail on a much-anticipated trip with Local Guide & Kung Fu Fly Fisher Wayne Eng, and today’s outlook is a little bleak. Back on the water by the end of the week? Probably.

In the meantime, I’m seeing a couple noteworthy developments occurring in our ongoing lovefest with Axis of Evil members Nestle and PacifiCorp, and I’ll try to get those written. Maybe even make some headway on a longer article or two…

See you at the Bactine Wagon, Tom Chandler.

Old Season Ends, New Fly Fishing Season Begins on the Upper Sacramento

November 19, 2007, by Tom Chandler 15 comments

In years past, the general trout season ended on November 15, and for a lot of us fly fishermen, the end of year party was more like a wake. Now with fly fishing allowed year-round on the Upper Sacramento, the Trout Underground takes stock.

Fly Fishing the "Uncyclopedia" Way (The Content-Free Encyclopedia)
