It turns out all saltwater fly fishermen are disgusting filthy perverts, and here’s the video to prove it (as if we needed proof):
Today’s fly fishing-free fun video post comes courtesy the toy most of you owned as a child – and probably still wish you had as an adult:
Screw the Batmobile; I want a four-wheel drive Radio Flyer.
Found via the Horse’s Mouth blog, this one’s a good reminder why a nice, sane, safely flowing trout stream looks, feels and is so much better than anything in saltwater.
Simply put, this is a public service announcement.
See you getting motion sick, Tom Chandler.
This came to us – a trailer of the film chosen as the “Film of the Year” in the 2010 Drake film awards.
Titled “Low & Clear” (by Finback films), it’s beautifully photographed and the premise is interesting, but I’d need to see more than the trailer to decide whether to rave or rant.
It’s a quieter price – one which may need a little more time to fully flower. As it stands, I’m still not completely clear about what’s happening, and would need to see more to decide if it’s art – or art-like movie product.
Naturally, art criticism generally says as much about the critic as the critiqued, so I’m hoping the Undergrounders will give it a view and weigh in (lights down, cue the projector noises…):
See you at the movies, Tom Chandler.
Thanks to Alert Underground Reader Eric for a pointer to this stunning fishing-related soccer goal celebration, which is apparently making the rounds:
The Best Fishing Related Soccer Goal Celebration Ever:
Special Underground Thought For The Day: Today’s fly fisher insists on performing noisy, look-at-me demonstrations after catching a fish. Wouldn’t the sport be better served by imaginative post-catch celebrations like the above – instead of the lame “high-five” stuff that permeates the new wave?
I know. The mind boggles at the very thought.
Thank god fly fishing has me.
Because everyone at the Underground badly needs a laugh, we’re reduced to throwing funny video at you – the latest from Underground Fave Filmmaker Steve Apple (we mugged Moldy Chum to get it).
Apple’s was the man behind Hustle & Fish – the movie that should have become Fly fishing’s Spinal Tap.
This short’s not fly fishing related, yet because it’s jammed with painful, awkward and funny moments (handled admirably by amateur actors) – and I dabbled in Internet dating prior to meeting the L&T – we’re watching it (again) anyway.
It’s a humorous video shot for Steve’s wedding (his wife is hot; all we can figure is her seeing-eye dog really likes him).

In truth, Apple’s deft handling of everyday awkwardness suggests a brighter future outside the fly fishing universe. (We’re thinking more Woody Allen than trout bum.)
See you in Hollywood (and congrats to the happy couple), Tom Chandler.
ps – It’s not too late to get Apple a present – we suggest buying a copy of Hustle & Fish, so he can move on to making his next painfully funny video.
Every year or so a new (or remixed) set of Bill Dance fishing bloopers makes the rounds, and four folks have forwarded this to me, so maybe it’s time:
The goose attack alone guarantees a cold sweat; I had my ass well and truly kicked by one of Beaked Avengers. Dance got off lucky…
See you running away, Tom Chandler.
Fly fishing’s supposed to be fun, but fly fishermen do tend to weigh it down with a lot of gear, money and expectations (not to mention words).
And frankly, the industry’s not wholly without blame. Sweeping ad campaigns clutter the magazines and Intertubes, and in a surprising number, grim, unsmiling fly fishermen fish as though there’s an IRS auditor waiting for them on the bank.
Stare directly into the marketing light too long, and you start to wonder why anybody would take up the sport.
Which is why it’s nice to see somebody in the industry apparently enjoying themselves, though the source this time will come as a surprise to most of us.
Orvis.
(Yep. Me too.)
I don’t know if I necessarily expected everyone at Orvis Central to be drinking brandy from snifters and wearing smoking jackets, but I wasn’t expecting self-deprecating humor.
I’ve heard it said dying is easy, it’s comedy that’s hard, so falling on your face in a massively unfunny video is a risk.
That hasn’t happened here, and the appearance of even a tiny bit of humor in this industry makes me hope somebody pulls their head out of their waders and hires potential comic genius filmmaker Steve Apple to produce a series of funny fly fishing/product videos.
They’d entertain, they’d inform, they’d go viral, and they’d lift the Cone of Darkness that sometimes seems to obscure the real fun of the sport.
(Note to fly fishing advertisers: if you don’t believe “fun” works, I challenge you to watch this short video by marketing juggernaut Nike, who produced what amounts to an amateur video that went totally batshit viral)
The rest of us are having fun on the river. Why aren’t fly fishing’s advertisers?
See you having fun, Tom Chandler.
Timelapse video is just so damned cool that I’m throwing another up on the Underground (courtesy Alert Underground Reader Scott).
Just lean back, Undergrounders, and enjoy. This video forces me to wonder why I sleep in a tent when I’m camping/backpacking in the mountains…

It’s well worth a few minutes of your day, even if you’re at work (your boss has probably forgotten your name anyway).
When people asked me why I left the Silicon Valley for the mountains – where economic opportunities, bookstores and women were few and far between – I wish I’d had this awesome time-lapse video to hand them (its only flaw is a lack of trout):
Time Lapse Round One from Sean Stiegemeier on Vimeo.
This was shot in Yosemite by a photographer named Sean Stiegemeier, who also got some amazing footage of the Icelandic volcano that recently busied itself making air travel impossible.
You can see several more breathtaking videos on his Vimeo site.
Tell ‘em the Underground sent you.
See you in the screening room, Tom Chandler.
