Video: Juvenile Alaskan Salmon vs Airboatzilla…

August 9, 2011, by Tom Chandler 2 comments

Watch what happens to these juvenile coho salmon when an airboat blasts through the area:

The videographer reported the fish were feeding again within the hour, but it does illustrate the typically unseen effects of high-speed boat traffic on underwater environments.

A Wholly Unrelated, Have-To-See, Non Fly Fishing Video…

If anyone ever asks why you head to the outdoors instead of the local mall, show them this video.

(A brief explanation of what you’re looking at here, though nobody seems to know what the lights moving along the horizon are).

Scott Fly Rods Rolls Out Commercial Worth Watching…

June 23, 2011, by Tom Chandler 6 comments

This Scott Rod company video is making the rounds online, and while one person amusingly called it a documentary (it’s a “commissioned” work — a commercial), it’s significant for a couple of reasons.

First, Felt Soul Media are pretty clearly in a class by themselves, and the video’s damn good stuff. If you’re going to hire someone to do something, might as well hire the best.

Second, it’s nice to see one of fly fishing’s less-inventive marketers finally loosen the straitjacket.

Scott is one of fly fishing’s iconic brands, but it’s also a company that might not exist in its present form if it weren’t for what we’ll term “vanity” ownership. With the appearance of direct sales models in the fly fishing world, companies like Scott Rods will be facing new pressures, and need to respond with new tactics.

See you on TV, Tom Chandler.

p.s. — I’m still waiting for someone to pull their head out of their ass and hire comedy fly fishing guru Steve Apple to produce a killer viral video…

More On The McCloud Dam Relicensing: Five Minutes of Data (and Peace of Mind)

May 25, 2011, by Tom Chandler No comments yet

Because the Underground believes in whipping dead horses, burying them, then unburying them again so they can be whipped some more, I’m posting an informative five-minute screencast by CalTrout’s often tongue-tied Conservation Director Curtis Knight, who explains the nuances of the proposed McCloud flow regime using actual data in the form of hydrographs.

CalTrout already posted an article about the McCloud’s proposed flows — and this is clearly biology tech of the pocket protector, taped glasses type — but it’s also fairly clear and succinct, and when it’s over, you’ll realize the McCloud’s future is looking pretty good.

There are still emails flying out there predicting as much as 4x increases in spring flows and a river that’s wholly unfishable well into July, and it’s rubbish.

See for yourself.

A good reminder just how exposed these critters are when spawning – and how fragile those spawning grounds are (and how tiny).

The Best Surfing Video About Fly Fishing (so far this week)

March 17, 2011, by Tom Chandler 7 comments

This hilarious video spoofs surfing, but I (sadly) recognized more than a few elements of what’s come to be the accepted modern fly fishing posturing zeitgeist.

The AEG Fly Fishing Film Tour Starts Today (or, Now That’s a Media Kit)

February 2, 2011, by Tom Chandler 16 comments

You’re unlikely to see a review of the Fly Fishing Film Tour on the Underground (there isn’t a stop closer than 3.5 hours away, and if I was going to drive that far, I’d drive somewhere and fish), but let’s give credit where it’s due – they do know how to put together a first-class Media Kit (yes, that’s a sixer of India Pale Ale):

The 2011 Fly Fishing Film Tour Media Kit

Now that, Undergrounders, is a Media Kit.

The fly fishing video world is still in something of an infancy; some productions are frankly brilliant (Felt Soul, Steve Apple, a few others, we’re looking at you), but too many lack insight or point of view (beyond “Zog say fish porn good“), and some are little more than rock sound tracks accompanied by mediocre video.

Still, good is good, and anything that spotlights the best video out there deserves support.

You can find their tour schedule here (interestingly, they’re playing in Fryeburg, ME – the tiny town that Nestle bludgeoned with a lawsuit and five appeals).

Again, you probably won’t see me there (that drive thing again) – and I’m not wearing the hat, which is kinda ugly (any takers among the Undergrounders?) – but I promise the Fly Fishing Film Tour I’ll drink the beer before I review the DVD.

See you on the silver screen, Tom Chandler.

Carp Under Glass…

January 4, 2011, by Tom Chandler 6 comments

Found via Alert Underground Reader Mark (bet he got it via Moldy Chum), this video of “a football field” of carp swimming under clear ice just makes me want to grab an ice fishing auger, though I can’t imagine how you’d land one of the bigger fish through a small hole (much less fight one of the things):

See you on ice, Tom Chandler.

It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like… Fishmen?

It’s like Holiday Cheer, only now with the great taste of fish. (Or, meet your scaly new overlords, fishermen…)
