Spring Cleaning…

April 23, 2006, by Tom Chandler 2 comments

With the last snow finally melting out of the Trout Underground’s backyard and no monster storms forecast for the coming week, we can hope that spring has officially arrived on the Upper Sac. It’s very green downcanyon, and starting to green up here at the top. It’s a time of year that – when you look out the window – appears warm and inviting, but if you open the window, you flood the house with cold air, starting the heater and making the cats glare at you because you’re a cement head.

It’s also time to admit that over the winter, you didn’t quite tear up the trout like you did last winter, when your head grew several hat sizes and megalomania settled in nicely for the summer. No, it’s a different spring from last spring, which is both depressing and precisely the reason you do this in the first place (and despite all the “you” in the entry, it’s possible we’re talking about me here).

It’s also time to admit that it’s only a week before my trip to Tennessee, and that I’m far enough behind in my work that there might not be much fishing before I go. And yes, there are a few leaders that need to be tied, a few size 14 yellow Beetle Bugs to be thrown together, and yes – that annoying question about how you’re going to fish those tiny brookie streams in the Great Smoky Mountains when your lightest-actioned travel rod is a a too-strong 8′ 5wt. More on this riveting story as it develops. Read more →

Welcome to the new Trout Underground!

April 22, 2006, by Tom Chandler 14 comments

It’s official! (well, as official as it gets here at the Underground). Welcome to the new Trout Underground blog site. I’ve moved 90% of the content to the new site (still looking for a home for Cool Eddy) and you can find all that content on this blog’s “static pages” (see the navigation links to your right or use the buttons across the very top of the page).

You’ll notice that you can now post comments in response to my posts. In order to keep comment “Spam” to a minimum (yup, spammers target blogs too), you’ll need to log in to comment, but it’s a seconds-long process and rest assured we’ll never sell your e-mail address to evil spam slime. What’s next for the Trout Underground…

April 20, 2006, by Tom Chandler No comments yet

Like any self-respecting trout, the Trout Underground isn’t content to sit in the current and eat any old bug that floats by. No, the Trout Underground is ambitious and agressive; the kind of trout that moves upstream, always searching for a better rock to hide behind with the biggest bugs kicking by.

Soon, you’ll surf into the Trout Underground and notice that it’s hiding behind a new rock – one that might not look as funky as the old one, but one that allows for features like reader comments to the reports. You’ll see the same wildly inaccurate fishing reports and odd observations about fly fishing, but now you’ll have the ability to add comments to my reports.

There are a lot of other reasons for my move to a new content management system – and I give up some control over appearance, so the new site isn’t quite as funky as the old one – but the bigger, better bugs far outweight the negatives.

Stay tuned… See you at the Web server, Tom Chandler

Sun, work, work & more work

April 19, 2006, by Tom Chandler No comments yet

A couple sunny days have put everyone at Trout Underground World Headquarters in a better mood. With flows slowly falling on the Upper Sac (4000+ cfs right now), Mother’s Day Caddis flying on the Upper Rogue, and a Tennessee plane ticket waiting for me in 1.5 weeks time, there’s a lot to be excited about.

Wayne Eng called to say his recent Upper Sac trips had been tough but not dismal; he’s spied a small handful of March Browns, and even managed to scare up a few to the dry.

Right now, I’m proving that old adage true — if you’re self-employed and work is slow, schedule a vacation. Then stand back and watch everyone come out of the woodwork. Though it’s killing me, I may not hit any of our rivers until this weekend. Over the years, I’ve heard tales of wild fishing (and wild disappointment) during the Rogue’s spring caddis hatch, but it’s always been a “drop everything and get here now” kind of gig. I’m hoping to hit it right purely by accident before I go. I’m sure you can see the difficulty…

This week and the next, I’ll be in the grips of my ritualisitic, pre-trip rod jones, where I carefully whittle down my rod choices to the bare minimum of bamboo rods I’ll need in Tennessee — before freaking out at the last minute and trying to cram them all into my duffle bag. It’s not pretty. See you at the rod closet… Tom Chandler

P.S. – don’t forget to join the Upper Sacramento River Exchange (or renew your membership) to be eligible to win the Chris Raine bamboo rod they’re giving away in an Opening Day drawing.

Tax this…

April 17, 2006, by Tom Chandler No comments yet

It dawned cold but largely snow free in Mt. Shasta, and the monster storm predicted for the weekend headed south. Jim Reams – a bamboo rod builder who lives on the Fall River – reported 14 inches of snow on the ground, an amazing amount for April.

That’s good for us (but bad for the Central Valley), and with largely blizzard-free weather forecast for the coming week, there’s even a chance at some fishing, though river flows will likely remain on the high side of “unpleasant” for quite some time.

The respiration of the planet…

April 15, 2006, by Tom Chandler No comments yet

Annoyingly alert reader Sully pointed out that just a few days ago the Upper Sac ran 7x it’s normal historic flow, and wondered if the big storm promised for this weekend wouldn’t push it past the 10x mark.

It’s this kind of speculation that drives me ever closer to a chemical dependency. After 1.5 days of actual spring weather, this morning found rain and snow falling on the front lawn of Trout Underground World Headquarters. It’s stopped for the moment, but several inches of snow are forecast for by Sunday evening. Plus it’s windy. Plus it’s… well, it sucks, that’s all. Read more →

The Trout Underground in the 21st Century

April 14, 2006, by Tom Chandler No comments yet

It’s time to enter the 21st century with some up-to-date software that limits how pretty I can make the site, but handles most of the content management work for me.

Plus, my readers can now leave comments behind! This is the real reason for the switch. Feel free!

That great big ball of fire…

April 13, 2006, by Tom Chandler No comments yet

Looking up in the sky reveals something rarely seen lately at Trout Underground World Headquarters – the sun. Apparently the turtle who carries the fiery ball across the sky has returned after a couple months partying in Cabo, though he’s due to start another vacation this weekend.

Clearly, the reptilian work ethic leaves a lot to be desired.

Steve Bertrand called in a search of a fishing partner to Baum Lake, but with two projects nearing completion and two more being moved to the (very, very hot) front burner, I have to be content with writing a fishing report for a river which has dropped significantly from its high of 15,000 cfs to 8,400 cfs – but is still largely unfishable.
