One Very Good Reason For Reading the Mail Tribune Outdoor Blog: Horse Racing

March 13, 2007, by Tom Chandler 6 comments

New outdoor blogs are popping up left and right, but I’ve chosen to highlight this one for a truly stellar reason.

You see, the author used to ditch school to go the horse races.

The Ties That Bind

Mark Freeman is the Oregon Mail Tribune’s Outdoor Writer, but at San Jose State, I knew him as the guy who first discovered the diner that would sell pitchers of beer early in the day (early in the morning, actually).

One day a friend and I stumbled across him on campus. We were on our way to class. He was on his way to play the ponies.

With a background like that, it’s little wonder he ended up a writer.

Intrigued? Visit his blog at: Link to Mail Tribune Blogs » Outdoor Journal

His paper started several blogs, but pop in to his once in a while and we’ll drive the outdoor blog visitor count far beyond that of the Mail Tribune’s “lesser” blogs, scoring a significant moral victory for the outdoor world.

Or something like that.

The Underground’s Fly Fishing Blog Watch: Two More For the RSS Reader

March 5, 2007, by Tom Chandler No comments yet

Just a quick post about two cool “new” fly fishing blogs.

In a prior post I mentioned the Teh Wind Knot; a literate site with an interesting view of life on the stream, yet I somehow managed to screw up my RSS feed and missed a couple gems.

Foremost among them was his series outing the membership list of the happy-to-privatize-your-rivers Spring Ridge Club in Pennsylvania.

Worth a visit.

The Wet Boots

Written by a soon-to-graduate college student, The Wet Boots is based in the Southeast . The author’s mission includes:

I want to show that there is a young group of anglers and writers who have a severe passion/obsession for this spiritual sport. Welcome to The Wet Boots. (No Bait Fishermen)

There you go.

Trout Underground Upgrades: Snazzy Stuff Awaits

February 17, 2007, by Tom Chandler No comments yet

Insomnia has its uses.

I slaved over a hot laptop all morning long, upgrading my blogs and adding a neat new feature to the Trout Underground.

When you leave a comment, you can check a box (just under the comment) and receive an e-mail notification when anyone else responds to that post.

It’s yet another example of the Trout Underground never resting until your blog-reading experience is as special as it can be.

Who loves ya baby?

The Trout Underground Goes Green (While Those Other Fly Fishing Blogs Turn Green With Envy)

January 25, 2007, by Tom Chandler 8 comments

The L&T Nancy and I try to keep our energy footprint to a minimum, but recently decided to offset the carbon dioxide we produce while heating and lighting the house.

We tumbled for carbon offsets, which are easy, affordable, and I even accounted for my Web server and home office. That means the Trout Underground is green too.

Ha! Take that, MidCurrent. Eat my dust, Moldy.

Yes Undergrounders, those big city blogs with their global-warming, fancy-pants ways are right now turning green with envy.

But enough crowing. I’ll cut right to the clear, simple explanation.

The Clear Explanation

Essentially, a carbon offset translates your global warming guilt (represented by your dollars) into carbon-dioxide free energy – which you buy in an amount equaling your carbon footprint.

Several Web-based companies offer carbon offsets, though I chose Terra Pass for its excellent reputation. Patagonia clothing - no slouch in the green department – uses Terra Pass, which was research enough.

Terra Pass Web site

From the Terra Pass Web site:

When you buy a TerraPass, your money funds renewable energy projects such as wind farms. These projects result in verified reductions in greenhouse gas pollution. And these reductions counterbalance your own emissions.

You can use their online calculator to figure your carbon offset and even buy an offset online.

Remember, you heard it here first – from the blog that dares to take on the fly fishing industry and beat it into submission with a yarn indicator, three split shot and a handful of carbon offsets.

Blogwatch: Biggie’s Bugs and Ramblings

January 17, 2007, by Tom Chandler No comments yet

Sure, we love to make sport of guides here on the Underground, but that doesn’t mean they’re not people too.

Plus, this guide (Biggie) is up to making fun of golfers, and runs hilarious politically incorrect videos about major political figures – reason enough to plug him here.

Biggie's Bugs and Ramblings

We’re adding Biggie (Josh, actually) to our RSS feed, and warning him that we’re watching…

Blogwatch: Richard Lee Merritt Fish/Book/Chess Blog

January 13, 2007, by Tom Chandler 4 comments

Every once in a while I stumble across an interesting new blog.

This one still has that new blog smell; it only features a few posts.

Still, Richard Lee Merritt’s blog offers an interesting mix. He loves old books (I love books too), plays chess (I played in a few tournaments in my day, and yes ladies, I’m already taken), and fly fishes.

I simply couldn’t pass it by.

And yes, I want a pipe just like his. Someday, I will be hip. But not today.

Trout Underground Continues Evil Plan to Rule All of Metropolis: Joins 9Rules Network

January 4, 2007, by Tom Chandler 12 comments

The Trout Underground is happy to announce that it’s now a member of the 9Rules Network – a community of top, kickass blogs.

Sure, I’m not much of a joiner, but I didn’t get to sit at the “Cool Table” in high school (cross country team and chess club) so I figure this is my chance.

Soon, I’ll be hanging with famous celebrities and being photographed with Paris Hilton as she crawls in and out of limousines sans underwear.

The other fly fishing blogs will turn green with envy, pestering me with pleading e-mails attempting to curry favor.

I, of course, will act contemptuous, ignoring their “D” list pleas. Life will be a whirlwind of depravity and high-volume blog traffic.

Think I’m overstating the benefits? HA! Here’s Proof:

Some People Hike Where There Are No Fish: Another Underground Shocker

December 7, 2006, by Tom Chandler 2 comments

We’re fly fishers, so we rarely hike any trail that doesn’t end at a stream or lake.

Yet it might astound you to learn the world is filled with people who hike just to see what’s around the corner. As shocking as that might seem, the hiking blogs are still worth a look. There’s even one that might help spring you for a fishing trip later in the year…

Tom Mangan
Some oddballs hike just to photograph scenes like this. Inexplicable, but apparently it’s accepted by society at large.

Besthike.com

One of my favorites is besthike.com – a blog dedicated to finding the world’s absolute best hikes. Heavy on the stunning photographs and long on the kind of hiking adventure I’d never undertake (short of a couple beers and the promise of 20″ brook trout), I freely admit to checking this one every day.

Two-Heel Drive

Another is Tom Mangan’s Two-Heel Drive, which aggregates the best hiking news, and offers a refreshing dose of perspective too.

WineHiker

Finally, those in the Bay Area seeking a weekend partner-friendly activity that will build desperately needed “spousal points” you can redeem for a later fishing trip, visit the Winehiker Web site and blog – a site devoted to hikes which inevitably end with good food and wine.

(Chicks dig that stuff. Guys do too).

Sure – other fly fishing sites might help you fish better, but are they helping you get out to fish more? See you hiking, Tom Chandler.

My Blogging Cup Runneth Over: Megalomania Sets In

December 5, 2006, by Tom Chandler 5 comments

Earlier this year the Trout Underground was recognized as one of the top fly fishing blogs, and now its marketing “sister” blog – The Copywriter Underground – has been recognized as a Top 10 Writer’s Blog by writing blog readers.

Written by yours truly, the Copywriter Underground is aimed at helping motivated marketing writers reach their goals, and is therefore of little interest to the slackers who frequent this blog of joyriding fly fishing troublemaking teenagers.

copywriter underground

My rule of thumb? Never skip a chance to to blow your own horn. They come around so infrequently (yes, megalomania has set in).

Tennessee Blogging

October 31, 2006, by Tom Chandler 4 comments

To say that Southeast Tennessee has captured my attention is an understatement. It’s pretty in a lusher, greener, less edgy way than the Upper Sacramento River and surroundings (whose raw, hard-edged appeal is impossible to top).

Backcountry Blog

If I had to live somewhere besides here, the Smokies would be right near the top due to the year-round fishing and intimate nature of the fisheries.

That’s why I was happy to find another new Tennessee blog by a Trout Underground reader. Titled A Backcountry Blog, the author is a hiker and new fly fisher, and also an addict of the Phillips 66 gas station slaw dog (where the Trout Underground experienced its first TN slaw dog).

This, of course, means he’s OK in our book.
