Hatch Repellent…

May 2, 2006, by Tom Chandler 5 comments

Today we fished the Little River inside the park; some of this I’d seen on prior trips, but most of it was new to me. Rich Margiotta, myself, and Ian slunk around and tried to look like nice, safe, non-predatory beings to the fish, and I have to say it only worked part of the time. It’s late, I’m beat, I’m hungry, and I’m still pretty sick, so this will be short.

I fished Raine’s 8’3″ 4wt, which really was a nice rod for the Little River, which is like a smaller, kinder gentler Upper Sac with weird trees and a different set of bugs. As you might expect, Ian has this place pretty wired, and recent evening hatches have been wild affairs, so even though my sick, abused body pretty much folded up the tent by 5:00, we stuck around until after 8:00, waiting for the evening’s festivities, which never really came off.

Ian immediately burdened me with the responsibility, and given the current, unfishable state of the Upper Sac, it’s hard to argue. Tomorrow, I’m expecting the Tennessee fish and game department to call with an offer to leave the state, thereby restoring the fishing. I’ll let you know if I take the money.

A couple different dry flies allowed me to land a handful and miss a bunch more. Ian used nymphs early and changed to dries midday to land close to a dozen. He moved at leat two real good fish, but landed neither. Rich had to leave early, but landed a couple and was probably the person really to blame for the lack of an evening rise (he’s not here so he gets the blame).

Tomorrow we’re floating the Holsten, and we’ll find out if that blizzard caddis hatch – which resulted in literally countless hookups for a pair of Ian’s clients last week and yesterday – can stand up to a liberal dose of Chandler’s Hatch Repellent. See you on the river.

The whompin, stompin, opening day blues…

April 28, 2006, by Tom Chandler 4 comments

“Opening” day is fast becoming something of misnomer around much of CA; flows on the Upper Sac just topped the oh-so-unpleasant 5000 cfs mark, and yesterday, local guide Steve Bertrand sacrificed a few gallons of $3.21 gas to reconnoiter the McCloud. He reports water flowing over the McCloud reservoir dam like money through congress, and while the water’s relatively clear, it is up in the trees.
This LA Times article reports similarly high water in many Sierra rivers, with similarly tough sledding for fly fishers.

Interestingly, after my report of CHP traffic enforcement efforts yesterday, someone pointed me towards this post on the Norcal board which describes heavy enforcement in the Redding area. So wherever you’re going, consider going there slowly…

Those awaiting the outcome of Chris Raine’s Desperate Attempt to Build a Brookie Rod Before I Go To Tennessee will no doubt find the accompanying picture interesting. It’s almost there…

Finally, so as not to incite any more threatening comments from overly sensitive readers, I’m not going to mention my upcoming Tennessee trip, though I did receive an e-mail from a Tennessee nameless Southeastern guide who said he floated a Tennessee nameless Southeastern river with a couple clients and absolutely hammered them on caddis dries all day long, including a couple of 17″ fish. So with that in mind, I’ll see you in Tennessee a nameless place.

“Top Boo” Reality TV grips Northern California town…

A flaming Chris RaineIn a gripping race against the clock, bamboo rod builder Chris Raine – risking life-threatening bamboo slivers and potentially career-ending varnish burns – is rushing to complete a brook trout rod prior to Tom Chandler’s upcoming trip to Tennessee.

His unprecedented days-long “speed build” of a 7.5′ 3-pc cane rod has gripped the tiny Northern California community of Dunsmuir in “Boo Fever,” with anxious residents inquiring hourly as to whether the rod will be completed by Saturday’s departure.

“This is bigger than the Opening Day Pancake Breakfast” said one.
