This is a truly impressive video of a Mako Shark cartwheeling out of the water several times in a row, though I think it’s more interesting for what it says about modern video culture than it does about fly fishing for sharks.
Notice that the angler braying “Oh my god” over and over stopped early in his solo to confirm that both cameras were running, apparently worried that his epicness wouldn’t be recorded (and therefore have no chance to go viral). Then he returned to being, you know… epic.
Frankly, I’m with the other anglers; one demanded they not let the shark on the boat, and the other gunned the engine to create some distance, both apparently driven by the image of that monster thrashing around and biting their naughty private bits off (not to mention whole legs).
I’ll take the survival of my private bits over going viral any day.
See you anywhere but the ocean, Tom Chandler.

I’m with you, Tom, and the other two trying to put distance between themselves and the beast. As for video, the jury is still out for me, though it’s clear that it doesn’t matter what I think. It’s a culture here to stay.

I’m betting this realization has driven you to begin recording the rigors of your
lazy, slacker-esqueretired workday for the rest of us to view on your blog…Tom Chandler(Quote)
No way. It would be too boring even for me. Besides, I’d probably have to get dressed.

… and the “Oh my, God” got pretty annoying after a while.

Yeah. I was reminded of that scene from Band of Brothers where the writer (Webb?) laments the fact that after he was wounded, all he could think to say was “They got me.”

You guys are old and lame! Hell, I’m old and lame, and I can still get off on watching that Mako go ape shit without getting my underoos all bunched up over some NSFW language and alleged improper video technique. My only complaint is they didn’t land it!

I don’t think Senator Webb wrote “Band of Brothers”. I counted nine jumps, not seven. Conway Bowman has written a book about casting a fly rod, published by Orvis. Several of my friends went out with him and caught a 150 lb. Mako; they got a picture with the fish’s tail about 15 feet off of the water. Doesn’t appeal to me, but, as you can hear, some folks really like it. Each to their own, I guess.
Hope the family, including WWD, are doing fine.

The writer in the series was David Webster; a lot of Ambrose’s information for the book came from Webster’s journals. Interestingly (in the context of this conversation), Webster later wrote a book about sharks, and then disappeared at sea in 1961. One source said he was shark fishing when he disappeared.

Oh, yeah. Mr. Bowman reports that he has had sharks jump over the boat. Jeeeezzz…
