A kayak fishermen is floating offshore, and out of nowhere, a clearly distressed dog swims up to his boat.
Weird enough, but it’s really only the endpoint of a truly tragic story that unfolded over the prior couple of hours.
Starting with: What was that dog doing swimming in the water?
Answer: The dog was being walked by a woman who was struck and killed by a 22 year-old driver who was fleeing another accident he’d caused before losing control of his car.
The dog was injured and apparently freaked out enough that when he saw the kayaker way offshore, decided to swim for it.
Watching the fisherman’s reaction to the dog in the video is priceless; when you learn why the dog was there, it’s downright heartbreaking.
This one’s been with me for 24 hours now. I don’t know what to say about it, except that it caught my attention, and that, as someone who will never own a dog (I can’t reconcile handling non-progeny feces), I felt for this one rather a lot. And that the yak guy who helped the dog is a good guy who’s probably had a fairly strange week.

I have to wonder how the dog ended up in the water; was he so freaked out by the accident that he had to run, but couldn’t because of the hurt paw (he got hit by the car too)? And that left swimming?
There’s also a surreal quality to all this; the real dramatic moment (the car crash, or more likely they’ll call it vehicular manslaughter) takes place out of sight, and the camera records what you’d have to suggest is a moment with Hollywood levels of poignancy…

Agree it is surreal. We see one part and try to fit the horror of what came before into the context of just another day on the water and a good deed. There is something about the dog finding the angler that certainly strikes a note.

Wow – what an amazing and sad story. I have done a fair bit of kayak fishing, and all I can say is that would have made my heart jump to see a dog approaching that far out … I probably would have thought it was ‘nessie :) As a dog owner I can understand how freaked out the dog must have been. They truly are mans best friend and this one was obviously terrified about the events that happened and was looking for another to help calm him down. Tragic!
