Crazy time is closing in here at the Underground, so I’m going to simply throw a couple pictures at you from yesterday’s quickie closing day trip, and warn you it might get a little quiet around here.

The now-standard Underground Trout Portrait (of the last small stream trout of the year/)
Yesterday’s trout were surprisingly willing to eat a dry, and the little guy above (about 8 inches) was the last of the handful I caught.
It’s a easy to get melancholy about the season closing on a set of trout streams not all that far from my home. The good news is I’ve got a bunch of small trout streams near my home, so if they disappear for 5.5 months, I still enjoy 6.5 months more access than most people.

See ya next year...
For now, I’m teaching more online marketing classes and then there are the clients who expect me to actually perform useful tasks for them before sending a check (the nerve).
Work is good (it’s what makes us miss fly fishing), yet I’d be happier with a little less of it, leaving me more time to write and fish.
I’m sure I’m unique in that lament.
See you in a couple days, Tom Chandler.

Sounds a lot like paradise to me. I just can’t believe these clients with their crazy expectations.

I know. It’s almost as if they don’t care if I get to fish.

Beautiful fish and a gorgeous little pool.

Tough to say it more succinctly than than that…

I enjoy catching the small ones even more then the big fish. Luckily I have many streams we can fish in Socal year round. I head up north to snowboard and fish on Hot Creek and Upper and Lower Owens. I also fish the Kern and other local creeks year round. I feel lucky I can still scratch the flyfishing itch year round, even in the snow.

Gotta love the year-round regs. Used to be everything up here closed (except the Lower Sac & Klamath), but Chris Raine got the Upper Sac opened up year-round, then the Pit followed — along with a couple down your way.
Only wish we could get year-round C&R on the little streams…

Hey! what’s with this sayonara stuff? I’ve got all my hooks sharp and reels greased. The best time of the year is about to start…winter steelies are the stuff that dreams are made of. tw

If we can get some crummy weather, I’ll be hitting the BWO hatches on the Upper Sac. During the winter, it seems like all the little fish on the Upper Sac disappear.
Fortunately, so do almost all the fishermen, making the Upper Sac a lot like an oversized small stream…

Tom, the season here in Iowa never closes and the streams (all spring creeks) stay open all year. My only lament is that the closest one is a 3 hour drive from where I live.

I’d love year-round fishing on our small streams, though even better would be a “regular” season with a C&R only winter and spring.

Here’s how crazy it is in Oregon, my stream doesn’t open until Jan. 1. The good thing about it is, no fishing from a floating devise (the guides just hate this).
