Stay tuned for a small stream adventure, brought to you courtesy of Ibuprofen (the Underground needs a sponsor, and it might as well be someone whose product I use every time I go fly fishing…)

Somebody caught trout this weekend... (even if I can barely walk now)
More to come. As soon as I’ve recovered enough to type.

We call it Vitamin I. It’s an essential nutrient for some outdoor adventures.

It’s hell getting old.

I think I now have the universal proof that fly fishing leads to better health.
Exercising leads to better health (unless you have a heart attack on day one and die.) One often has pain after exercise. You have pain after fly fishing. Therefore fly fishing must be exercise and, ultimately, lead to good health. If one wants better health, one should fly fish more. No need for going to the gym.
This is brilliant stuff.

Several miles of cliffs, bouldering and bushwhacking trees/willows/deadfall definitely qualifies are exercise.
I left the Wonderdog home for a reason…

Your adventure and driving spirit will help subside any soreness felt later after fishing. Those colorful fish you bring to hand will help negate the pain of your knees and acheing back while driving home. Hopefully you took the wonderdog on your trip, because if you did’nt, his bite might be worse than any pain aquired while fishing……..Paid for by man’s best friend.

In the not-too-distant past, I found myself asking “Jeezus, am I that old?” Of course, the answer is yes. But I’ve taken up riding a bicycle (one can never have too many hobbies) in an effort to get into some better shape. It’s fun, and Roseville has lots of neat bike paths, to say nothing of the one that goes along the American River for about 13 miles. So, now all I have to do is stop bicycling long enough to go fishing…

Hi Tom,
Love your blog. I wanted to chime in that chronic use of NSAIDs like ibuprofen or aleve also suppresses mending of connective tissue. It reduces inflammation but that also blunts the body’s cascade to initiate repair. Vitamin I is nice but I recommend against regular use. The alternatives I use are joint mobility (see Pavel Tsatsouline’s excellent “Super Joints” book), fish oil (shown to be as or more effective than vitamin I, and Crossfit (some may see it as hard exercise but it is truly a maintenance plan and owner’s manual for your body into old age). I’m writing this in gratitude for your writing so I hope in some way this helps. Feel free to email if you any of this remotely interests you.
Best to you,
Matt

We’ve got the Wonderdog on fish oil, and I suppose I should try it. If it doesn’t work, at least my coast will be lustrous and shiny.
