The Top Five "Perfect" Ideas For Growing Fly Fishing Among Urban Dwellers

By Tom Chandler 9/6/2010

In honor of the upcoming IFTD show (which AFFTA features in its now-daily emails), the Underground has again taken it upon itself to single-handedly offer its can't-miss ideas for growing fly fishing among hip, urban populations. (Believe me, these will outperform any combination of free casting clinics.)

Behold, Undergrounders, and be prepared to weep as did Einstein when he first beheld relativity:

The Five Best Ways to Grow Fly Fishing Among Urban Populations:

5. Create series of "Vegan Hunting & Fly Fishing Clubs" in big cities

4. Equip all drift boats with wi-fi and iPhone charging stations

3. Valet Parking on major rivers

2. Rename Madison River to "Studio 54"

1. Run shuttle buses from downtown areas to "Fly Fishing 101" classes on rivers, but tell passengers they're going to Starbucks for free coffee

As always, feel free to add your own in the comments section - or simply begin worshipping me openly.

See you in metropolis, Tom Chandler.

Here's one that's bound to be a hit. http://www.padgadget.com/app-details/?a=388117818&f=100&t=1 Fly Fishing on your iPad. The author is obviously not a serious fly fishermen or he would not be giving it away, he'd be fleecing the urbanites to fund his next trip or a new rod.

I would do this after opening a hot dog stand in front of the vegan hunt & fish club.

Would you do this before or after joining the vegan hunt & fish club?

Getting over trout snobbery and trying carp. You'll probably get your ass handed to you, and/or discover that backing can actually be used for more than just balancing your reel. You wanna save fly fishing? Get creative and go after what is probably already in your neighborhood!

Fly fishing game? Hell, that's small potatoes. I'm going for a starring role in Grand Theft Auto - I'll be the driver of the beat-up 21 year-old Ford Bronco with the fishy smell.

What about a Wally the Wonderdog canine fly fishing etiquette video for all the "dwellers" pets? Hey, you never know- some of it might even rub off on their owners.

How about virtual reality fly fishing for those "rural dwellers"? Or maybe a Wiki game station with the Tom Chandler 2010 edition Underground fly fishing game out on the patio next to their personal juicing bar and driving range? Great idea as long as it doesn't involve them actually showing up on the river somewhere.

Tell them it's not "hunting", it's "engaging".

Should have known. Figured they would build one of those for the "vacation homes" crowd over in Martis Camp. Everyone has 8-15,000 sq ft vacation homes, right?

How about drive-thru fishing so casting from the driver's seat while on the cell is possible? What about yoga/casting classes for an intense workout before that big shot of wheatgrass?

Riverside sushi bars that turn the day's catch into the freshest sushi in town, complete with salmon eggs sprinkled on top. They can eat the eggs or put them on their hooks when the newly purchased flies aren't working out.

You guys are mean :) 20 something here, typing this on my iphone heading back to mpls after fishing south east minnesota spring creeks. If you guys are serious about finding allies for stream conservation, you'll find that simply inviting people out for a trip will do wonders.

Why bother? They will never get it.

But when Muffy and Buffy give it up and go back to golf the pickings at the yardsales can be pretty spectacular. Sadly those folks aren't going to have any rods or reels I'd fish with but I got a few shoeboxes full of primo tying stuff and a pair of really nice waders for $20 bucks or less that way.

You have described Old Greenwood in Truckee where the "stream" is pumped between two golf course ponds (fed from an 1,100 deep well). From their website: Special consideration was given to a 150-yard stretch along hole No. 10, which includes ponds near the tee and green connected by a stream running along the fairway where most of the fishing activity takes place. This section of water was designed ... more with calms and rapids, as well as different habitat options for fish. "Fish the left side, golf the right side," said Jack Nicklaus, an avid fisherman who made time to test the local streams during one of his site visits. In June, 1,550-pounds of trout were stocked in course ponds.

It exists already (in several places), though one of the more egregious examples is called The Spring Ridge Club, and while they're using the same river everyone else is (private sections of it), they're stocking it with monster trout and feeding them, and then charging a few bazillion per year for "memberships."

I've wondered why someone hasn't created a man-made river with all kinds of trout fishing water and maybe even a pond or two and charge money for membership... like a golf course. You could have a secion for browns, another for bows, etc, etc. The water would be perfectly balanced and oxyngenated. Heck, thier could even be a clubhouse/pro shop wher you could spend insane amounts of money for gear ... more and clothes... just like a golf course.

Too many "hip, urban" types out there as it is; those who see it as counting fish or size and what kind of gear they have. 'Nuff of them!
