The Top Five Signs Your New Fly Rod May Have Been Designed By Apple iPhone Team

By Tom Chandler 7/15/2010

#5: You waited in line to buy it - even though it's exactly the same as all your other fly rods

#4: Rod casts great in the morning, but loses all casting power halfway through the day

#3: Instead of hiding purchase from wife, you cast rod whenever anyone's watching - even at work and in car

#2: Rod label says "5wt" but manufacturer says label faulty - rod may randomly become a 2 weight

#1: Hold rod by cork grip and every fish is disconnected from your line

I can beat on Apple for the iPhone, but then, I'm the fool who chose the Blackberry Storm for his first smartphone experience, and remains saddled with that square, glossy turd to this day.

Expect a terse email from Steve Jobs. Nice. Also: You've gotta meet a guy named "Fast Freddy" down by the docks in the middle of the night, so he can modify your reel seat so you can use normal reels. Otherwise it only works with a handful of expensive, inferior, 'approved' reels. ;) My buddy has one. Could go on like this forever. haha

Even though you can throw an older rod in the car/truck and head out to the water in a matter of minutes, this rod alone takes forever to load.

That does it! I'm not getting an iPhone and I was thinking about it.

Vintage 1980 rod Model IIe is quite alarming when you look inside of it and see how little stuff is in there.

#6: Only approved reels and fly lines can be used - and can be unapproved on a whim.

At least this rod would be really intuitive to use and you could be fishing in seconds instead of trying to find the damn "fly fishing mode" and hidden menus like other rods.

Good ones!!! I've been wondering if I can get a rotary one??? I'm only doing the app thing if they have one that won't let people call me unless I want to talk to them

Funny stuff Tom - at least to those of us that are both iPhone users and fly fishers. I took my iPhone 4 fishing twice over the last couple weeks and I'm happy to report that it did not interfere with my casting. I did use my new phone to catch nice photos - and even video - of the rivers and fish.
