-5: You park far from the target water and wait until there's not another car in sight before getting out, grabbing your gear and racing into the woods unseen. Ninja, small stream fanatic.

I wish that I could send you a picture of my home trout water! I have a five foot, four weight that overpowers the fish in the stream. If the Stripers aren't around in numbers this year (again) that might be most of my fishing until fall. It's good to be back!

You sit and watch the water go by and you dream about better days, smiling trout and good dogs... And the whole time a fish is under your feet. (Ray Ovington) was right. They are all under the tip of your rod. The ones your remember that is.

Interestingly, the "One Year Ago" widget in my sidebar told me that this time last year, I fished an alpine stream - that's at least another month out of reach this year.Oy vey.

I hang my head in shame and admit- “I am a small stream fisherman” Don't worry. I'm forming an expensive extensive support group right now...

Pretty cool!!! 6" wild fish in small waters are more exciting to me than the 26" holdovers in the local tailwater........Browns, Bows, Cutts, Atlantics I love them all but none as much as Brookies up high in the mountains.......

Well thanks TC, ...This post has forced me to admit that perhaps I'm not the all around flyfisher I thought I was. The 4X and willow comments are especially damning, though I must admit that I have thought it strange for a long time that when I tell folks I bring to my favorite fishing holes to be "extra super stealthy"- they still manage to scare everything for three pools in either direction...I ... more hang my head in shame and admit- "I am a small stream fisherman"....

-3: your concerns for the day include Stinging nettle, Poison oak, and rattlesnakes. Among other hazards. 4x tippet on small streams? I've been using 7x myself. If you're not fishing 4x or 5x - the stream isn't all that brushy. I started buying the "guide" spools of 4x. The fish don't care about the tippet size on the tiny creeks, but the trees do. They gobble up 6 like its no tomorrow. If its a wide-open ... more small creek... well then of course, fish 7x... but I don't tie flies fast enough to fish 7x on a Southern California Freestone.

0. Are unsettled at the prospect of wading through water deeper than your Converse Hi-Tops. -1. You give up trying to cast into the deep shade of an impenetrable lie, instead of being frustrated you extend your arm and dap the fly vertically into the Inaccessible Grotto of Massive and Hidden ... after you verify no one is watching.
