Tom:
You have your rights to think that the military Boonie hat is the best head ware for outdoors activities. I have my own opinions, from 27 years of military service.
I hated the Boonie! When it rain, the rain water would cause the brim on the hat to become limp, causing cold rain water to run down the back of my neck. It was not waterproof, and all the waterproof spray did not last long. In my opinion the cloth hat was worthless.
I used a Australian Dress Bush Hat, that is made of wool, and with the lanolin in the wool, gave me better protection of keeping my head dry during the Monsoon Season. Also no cold water down the back of my neck. I did not wear it with the side brim up, and I punched out the top, so that it was dome shape.
In 2001 I replaced the Australian Dress Bush Hat, with a Stetson XXXX Beaver as my fly fishing hat. The Stetson protects my head, neck and ears from the rain. It also protects me from those hot cloudless days where the heat just beats down a a person. Not forgetting that the wide brim, has kept me from getting my ears pierced.
Yes neither the Australian Bush Hat, nor the Stetson, can be folded up into a small wade and stuck in a pocket, it is just that I always were a hat outdoors, no matter the weather conditions….
In cold weather wearing a hat will help keep your feet warm, and in warm weather and hat will protect you from your neck and ears becoming severely sunburn. If the hat is has proper insulation from the cold and heat like a Stetson. You will not be as suceptable to heat injuries….
You have your opinions, you now know mine!

Parnelli;
You posted this comment under the wrong article (I’m assuming you wanted to put it under the Boonie hat article).
First, I suggested the Boonie was the ideal warm weather hat – not the best choice during monsoon season or the winter.
I have endured short/mild rainstorms in a Boonie, and it’s interesting to note the new versions are treated with a water repellent so they shed a light rain relatively well.
They won’t do much else, and I’d suggest real rainwear for those situations.
