The problem is this. We’re getting lots and lots and lots of this:

That's three inches of snow - with more fallilng.
When frankly, at this time of year we need to see stuff like this:
Three inches of snow have fallen already this morning, power’s been out twice, the wind is howling, and I’m forced to double-check the calendar.
It’s April, right?
This snow shouldn’t last, and warmer days are forecast this week, but how the snow from the last three days will affect the rivers for this weekend’s general trout season opener isn’t entirely clear.
(I’m making calls and rounding up information for a pre-season post as I write this).
Will access be good? And what happens to the flows?
We’ll see.
Meanwhile, the Underground would like to offer up its own heartfelt Salute To The Weather:

This caption left intentionally blank (use your imagination).
See you in xanax line, Tom Chandler.

I’m betting that three years of drought has rendered all them shoveling muscles loose and flabby – and the physicality of Satan’s Snowblower replaced by the self propelled Golf Cart of Hot Chocolate – has weakened you further.
… those are doubly important inches of snow; firstly you can tie all them flies you have postponed, and secondly you’ve got a second chance to reach for the shovel and restore that heroic physique to the lean, whippet – needed for Trout Season’s Opener.
… come July, when the river is still fishing like May, and your self-induced deadlines prevent you from fishing – then it’s time to get pissed.

Flabby from not shoveling snow? Where the hell were you during January’s storm?
No way – I’m still a god. Supermodels still call on a weekly basis, and the L&T is forced to screen them out of my incoming calls.
In any case, I shoveled four inches of snow from the back porch, but it’s warming and the lawn’s even starting to peek through.
That’s good for my driveway, but this great big slug of water is about to hit the river, and we all know what that means…

But this is perfect stuff for Wally to play in; and the photographs show him off with really great contrast.

I don’t like winter no more ! I bet right now theres literally 100′s if not 1,000′s of hardcore flyfishers all over northern california tryin to devise a plan for this weekend.

Nice weather ahead (see forecast below), but right now, we’re “enjoying” one of the strongest windstorms in recent memory.
You’ve got to think a plague of locusts is next.
I’d suggest the Upper Sac won’t be in prime shape.

I’ve been planning on being in Dunsmuir Mon-Sat. next week … don’t know if I should plan to fish or ski. Guess I can try out my Snowshoe Stonefly.

It’s warm, and the snow’s already melted out in Dunsmuir (and parts of Mt. Shasta). The Upper Sac will likely be tough to wade, and fishing there will be what we call “selective” – you’d better know your high water spots.
