McGuane is one of the personalities in Tom Brokaw's Boom! Voices of the Sixties. A really fun book to read, particularly for those who claim to not remember the era. And there are two shots of him -- one contemp, looking elder Boomer, and another from the inhaling time, long-haired, denim shirt, member of the Eagles, c. 1970.

Nick's write-up certainly made me stop, think and be thankful for having known the simple pleasures that fly fishing offers. Not sure I can work that into the Thanksgiving dinner speech but I'll try.

Andy:

I'm two posts in the hole right now, but I tested the Simms Vibram soles (one with studs, one without) on Sunday, and the results weren't all that edifying. I've got to get that one written, and I'll copy and paste your comment over to it when I do.

Totally off topic but before I forget and assuming anyone cares, here goes.

Regarding the rubber sole vs felt wading boot issue:

My buddy forgot his boots for a Klamath steelhead session the other day. I loaned him my Simms G4 boots and used my old (beat to oblivion felt soled with a few studs left) Weinbrenners.

While my buddy looked like he was trying to fish in an ice rink, I felt at home in the old felt soled beaters. After comparing notes we agreed the felts were like rock climbing in precision shoes where a toe placement holds without fail and the rubber was like climbing the same face in lugged hiking boots. We did agree the Sims boot was more comfortable and walked better out of the water.

I do use studs so my experience is not not totally within Toms testing standards of studless.

Absent some yet to come compelling evidence the rubber prevents invasive introduction my next boots will be studded felt.
