With California’s general trout season almost over (15th), fly fishermen all over the state are no doubt considering one last run at the McCloud River – or some other favorite water.
Frankly, it’s a great idea – but bring foul weather gear, because the Mount Shasta forecast suggests wet and cold.

Sure, the optimists among you are already thinking “that’s BWO weather” and you’d be right, but don’t forget the big October Caddis dries.
In fact, it’s possible I’ll make one last pass at a certain mountain stream (heavily edited pictures if I do).
Any Undergrounders making last-ditch plans for the season closer?

I heard the road down to the McCloud was already closed, and that all the big fish were already down stream for the winter.

I would like to confirm the misdirection. The road is blocked. Since there are no fish, I will be in the area waterskiing. Mike(Quote)
Hmmm… that’s odd… I was down there today… lovely. Bjorn(Quote)
Bjorn, clearly, the road was blocked ever-so-shortly after you left. Why, I’m surprised you didn’t see them closing the road behind you in your rearview mirror. Smarter and Better Looking Brother(Quote)
Well, we did quit early, so maybe we missed that. http://wp.me/pCfe5-ep Bjorn(Quote)
As of today, about 20 of us are hitting the McCloud and camping at Ah Di Nah. We expect our group to be at least 30 strong before we head out, maybe more if everyone can make it this year. Don(Quote)
URGENT NOTICE:
As of this posting, all McCloud River fishing accesses are closed for cleaning.
According to Official Fish & Game Spokespeople Speaking Officially, the river has simply “gotten extremely dirty over the past year, and to ensure a safe, sanitary outdoor experience, we’re closing it until we can get all that dirt and mess taken care of.”
