UPDATE: I’ll certainly write more about this development next week; it’s the culmination of a lot of work on the part of a lot of people, and it deserves a few more nouns, verbs and adjectives. Also, Nestle still owns the old mill site in the middle of McCloud – anyone want to buy, protect, or use for sustainable development a 240 acre chunk in the middle of trout heaven?

I hate to be a downer, but I doubt this is the end of the Nestle saga. It simply does not make sense for Nestle to pay for environmental analysis on its own merit, unless they plan on using it sometime in the future. And as far as I can tell there is no commitment other than a simple verbal discussion that they are abandoning the concept (for the immediate future). While they may say that the studies are for community development (which would be decent PR for them), having talked to people more familiar with the work, I am not so sure that’s the case here. It makes much more sense to do the studies independently, then follow up with a new revamped proposal in a few years when people have taken their eye off the ball. Fishermen have a tendency to believe tall tales, and I don’t think the situation here is any different.

Didn’t even come close. Nestle has plenty of experience getting what they want, and they get it from almost any small town. Except McCloud. Shouldn’t Nestle just fire David Palais?
