“Say honey – what say we go someplace where big, stupid fish jump way out of the water – and do what we can to make them jump higher. Sounds fun, right?”

Ouch. That, my friends is a broken jaw. And maybe the end of a relationship.
What you see is a woman’s jaw being broken by a flying asian carp, and since this whole thing was her fiance’s idea, the Underground’s Relationship Counseling Division senses trouble.
The flying carp victim – a woman named Jodi Barnes – now has her jaw wired shut for the next four weeks, and we’re tempted to feel really sorry for her… until we read the following quote from fiance (and TV hunter) Chris Brackett:
“We were going really slow because that seems to get them to jump really high,†Brackett said. “Jodi had shot at one and was leaning forward to reel in her arrow when another fish came out of nowhere to her right and then hit her in the jaw.â€
Oh. You wanted them to jump real high out of the water.
Turns out Mr. Brackett sells videos of his bow & arrow carp wingshooting (frankly, we’d just use a 12 gauge), and if you’ve ever spent much time watching TV hunting shows, you’d know that TV fly fishing shows scintillate by comparison (not to mention the virtue thing – TV hunting shows are typically infomercials in disguise). He’s not even universally loved if the comments below the story are any indication.
We wish Ms. Barnes a speedy recovery, though we wonder if carp shooters might not want to consider hockey masks or something. Just saying.

That’s gonna leave a mark!

I was very sorry to hear about the broken jaw; I hope it heals quickly. Was the woman injured?

And some people worry about getting attacked while IN the water.
As your story, and this one
(http://sanddollaradventures.wordpress.com/2008/05/01/when-pigs-can-flyon-second-thought-maybe-they-shouldnt-try/) proves, it is when normally water-bound wildlife leave their bounds do people get killed, as by flying rays (or sometimes kill they each other, as in the case of the dolphin story I linked to).

Ultimate Fighting Carp…I told you, PETA is serious ’bout training the animals to fight back.

Maybe these guys nailed Benson?
Ed(Quote)
I can see the TV commercials already.
Turns out Benson died of spawning complications, which makes sense, though you have to wonder why those wacky Brits named a “she” Benson to begin with. It’s another mystery…
Tom Chandler(Quote)
I believe she was called Benson as she was originally moved to Kingfisher lakes with a partner carp called Hedges. If you don’t know, Benson and Hedges are a well known cigarette brand in the UK. Maybe the delivery truck driver smoked them or something. Hedges escaped from the lake into the nearby River Nene a few years ago. Coincidentally my Aunt lives in Tansor literally a stones throw away from the lake and has a waterfront property on the Nene. Maybe I should try and track down Hedges to further the legend……

Um… This can’t be real! Im sure it is but Im left flabbergasted by it. What are the chances of a fish jumping that high and hitting you square in the jaw?

It’s very real – the asian carp jump out of the water, and in fact, the people in the boat were shooting them with a bow & arrow (like wing shooting with a shotgun) when it happened. A bit of a “beware what you ask for, you may get it” moment.

I don´t like carps… But wingshooting it is very brutal.
Eduardo Sanchez(Quote)
My vote is for the shotgun, although I think a 12 guage is a bit of overkill. Nice little 28 guage side-by-side would do nicely.

I think my Browning Superposed 20 Gauge would do wonders, but there is the little matter of all the dead carp. Shooting them with a bow and arrow at least allows you to collect the damned things.

OK so this is epic funny… but lets look at one small overlooked fact. How awesome is a chick that wants to shoot fish with a bow, and replies “kill them all” from the hospital by text message.
Fantastic.

Browning over-and-under 20 sounds like a beautiful gun, but still a bit of overkill for leaping carp, I believe.
