The new buzz word ( err I mean phrase ) is “due to lagging economy we need to cut more timber”….the US Forest Service is looking into ways to extract more $$ from public lands.
A knee jerk reaction that will create very little income but will create long term effects.
It’s just another sad chapter in the way that folks continue to look at public resources and use them for private gain, usually taking profits out of the area where the resources occur. Think salmon canneries on the Columbia. Think of logging in Oregon where the timber company profits, as well as the lumber move out-of-state. Think of the long-gone forests in the upper Midwest. Or the coal fields in Appalachia. Or the coal gas extraction in Wyoming. The list goes on and on. One would think we would learn. But then one remembers that we live in an unreflective society.
