I believe in CA they have banned the use of “salt” (sodium products) on our highways. Here in Mammoth Lakes Caltrans uses volcanic cinder (dust/gravel) to increase traction etc. Works great but creates nasty dust clouds on the roads when the snow melts.
Dave: They use cinders around here too, and as a cyclist, I can tell you when that stuff gets ground to a powder and then wet, it turns into the roadside equivalent of industrial grinding slurry – murder on bicycle wheel bearings.
On the other hand, it’s not murder on trout and other animals, so I prefer it to salt.
