The “Cheney as Honored Speaker at American Museum of Fly Fishing” story continues to grow legs, capturing the hearts and minds of reporters at what we’ll (for now) call “the mainstream media.”
One even included a link to the Trout Underground, which forces us to question his sanity.
ABC News posted a short piece (which referenced the 40Rivers blog); Alan Gregory of the Standard Speaker weighed in; and in a Daily News story, we learn that one AMFF Board Member has resigned in protest, and that another – a noted podiatrist (congratulate me on my podiatry-joke related temperance here) – hints at the real reason Cheney got the invite:
Gary Sherman, a New York podiatrist on the museum’s board of trustees, called Cheney “a fine speaker” and “a man who has the ability to help us raise money.”
It’s possible both are true, though the Underground’s Historical Division would like to point out the fact that Cheney’s “fine” auditory qualities are accompanied by the stench of tens of thousands of dead salmon, courtesy the Klamath fish kill.
Perhaps podiatrists are good at making money in the face of strong odors, but we’ll reiterate: Inviting Cheney to their fall fundraiser is a little like inviting Joe Camel to an American Lung Association meeting, and then wondering why all the noise.

Since all of the responses to your prior piece either started or ended with, ” .. that’s the last dime AMFF gets out of me …” How does the good doctor figure it’s a positive increase to cash flow? kbarton10(Quote)
Probably because just one of the donors the AMFF has in mind with the Cheney thing is likely to donate more than fly fishing’s blog readership put together. Face it, we’re dirtbags (not that there’s anything wrong with that). Tom Chandler(Quote)
With all that has been posted and reported and discussed in regard to this issue, I think your last sentence is the perfect way to sum it all up. DSflyman(Quote)

Kieth Olberman even did a little bit about Darth Cheney’s
upcoming visit last night on MSNBC.
Didn’t mention Tom though. :>)
You could also tell that Keith doesn’t know squat about fishing,
much less Fly Fishing.

We’ve been talking about not sending money to the American Museum of Fly Fishing. What about NOT putting money in the pockets of the Board of Trustees who voted to invite Cheney? Who ARE the rest of the Board of Trustees?
If, for example, some of the board members are rod or reel manufacturers, I sure don’t want to buy anymore of their equipment. If he/she is a vehicle manufacturer or connected to a bank, it would be time to call our congressmen and senators to vote “No” for another bailout of that specific company or entity. If you hit these particular people in their pocketbooks, they not only lose money, but they also lose status.
As for this podiatrist, I don’t live on the East Coast, but I would like to know if any of the fly fishing clubs in the general New York vicinity of this guy are taking any action. In other words, letting their members know who Gary Sherman is, what he has said, and to not use his services. The reactionary in me would like to put a picket line outside of his office (and any of the other Board of Trustees who invited Cheney), as long as it is done in a legal fashion and in a civil manner. (Yeah, I know. The reality is that it is not going to happen.)

I think one way people might be making money on the deal is tax write-offs for donations of equipment – “this toenail clipper was actually Dick Cheney’s tippit clipper – valued at $1,200 for tax deduction purposes – donated to the AMFF,” or this shoelace was actually Dick Cheney’s stringer used on the Snake River while fishing on his ranch (the house being protected by a federally-built and maintained levee against any unexpected floods.) Let’s keep pressure up – don’t let this slip through the cracks. Cheney has no more place talking about fly fishing than he does about the poor profitability of oil companies. JAK(Quote)
