Yeah, I don't even tell strangers I'm from California any more without prefacing it with "the mountains in far northern." I don't hate SoCal, but I don't live anywhere near it either, yet Disneyland remains the focal point in most people's perceptions of Californians...

I am sure you hear this Tom; as I travel outside of nothern California, people often seem to think that all of California is L.A.-ish in climate. Having lived for over twenty years in the western Great Basin area of northeast CA, we have "enjoyed" a few minus 20 at night and a "high" of zero degree days. L.A. indeed.

What did I do outside?...pretended to hunt on Honey Lake or fish in Eagle Lake while drinking Rumplemintz.

Well, let's see, if it's only moderately cold out, say single digits, it still waterfowling or chasing pheasants (unless the wind is 20+ mph), or skiing which is always fun - as long as you keep moving. Down to about -10, if it's sunny a couple hours of cross-country skiing is possible, and splitting firewood becomes a more popular outside activity. Anything below -10, and splitting firewood becomes "the" outdoor activity - and the inside house walls finally got painted just the other day. As well as tying flies and working on gear. 'Course when I was much younger and guiding in Alaska, it was work, work, work even at -45. Still got all my fingers and toes, but not much sense my 94 year old Mom says. Merry Christmas!

I go fishing. Colder the better. -2 yesterday morning...in my garage. Of course, I count on standing on the water, not in it. I used to flyfish in winter but it got tiring cutting those long thin strips through the ice. 'struth, though, this ice-fishing thing has seriously cut into my fly tying.
