McCloud Coming Back to “Normal” Flows – Going to be a Busy Last Week to the Season

by Tom Chandler on November 5, 2008 · 5 comments

From somebody at PG&E (via Curtis Knight at CalTrout):

The James B. Black Powerhouse is back in operation and PG&E is completing start up procedures.  Spill from McCloud Dam has stopped and the flow at the Ah-Di-Na gage is back to base flow.  As the powerhouse returns to full operation, no further spills are anticipated.

Have at it, Undergrounders. I expect to see quite a few of you on the McCloud this coming weekend.

Damn. I wish I could get up there; I’ve got family obligations. A long trip to the grocery store perhaps?

I’m not sure if its the rains (Mud creek?) or just the fact that the flows have gone up and down drastically (PG&E & rains), but the NTU is pretty high at the moment. I don’t mean to sound like fly fishing is only good when all the planets are aligned ;-) If I were going up there I think exactly locating feeding fish will be the task at hand, that said, the best day of fishing I ever had up there it was pouring.

Thanks Tom for highlighting the issues around the McCloud flows this year. Hopefully, PG&E will view this year as an example of what not to do/how not to handle its management of the McCloud flows, and see the future as an opportunity to do things right.  (Quote)

At the Underground, we deeply admire your sense of humor.  (Quote)

FLASH: Steve Bertrand called and said a friend hit the McCloud… and found it unfishably dirty. (New post coming).

Will it clear before the end of the season? Don’t know.  (Quote)

Any chance that Bollibokka will be fishable next weekend? I’m coming up from Houston and have had this trip on the calendar for over a year.  (Quote)

Chris: Next weekend? Doesn’t the season end on Saturday? I don’t think it looks that great, but there are other rivers up here. For more recent information, see this comment from local guide Craig Neilsen  (Quote)
