Underground Commerce: George Maurer Bamboo Fly Rod for Sale

By Tom Chandler 9/25/2008

In the interest of keeping the stack of rods in the corner from growing completely out of control, I've decided to move a couple rods over the next few months - starting with a fished-once 8'3" 5wt George Maurer bamboo fly rod.

You can read the listing and see the pictures at the Classic Bamboo Fly Rod site (but only the Undergrounders get free shipping).

My goal? End up with a handful of 8.5' rods that get fished regularly, and that means winnowing my embarrassing collection of 8'-8.5' rods.

I'm asking $1500 for this fished-once rod that sold for $1695 when new (at least it would have if you could get one; George Maurer - the man who taught more people how to build bamboo fly rods than any other - suffered an untimely death a little over a year ago).

See you at the bank, Tom Chandler.

Hi Yahna, It's been awhile, but my wife and I visited your family near Trexlertown back in the early 90's. We were there to pick up your Dad's Rockey Mtn Sp prototype #001. We met him at a MD trade show. He said the rod was sent to CO for JG to check out, and because it was "used," we could actually (as teachers) save up and eventually come to your home and bring the rod home. what a great artist ... more your pop was. Hope you are doing well. Cheers - Joel

Hi Chris, Thanks so much for your e-mail! It is always nice to hear from one of my dad's friends. I'm sorry that you had to learn of his passing online. He passed away very unexpectedly and is still greatly missed. I was pretty young but have some memory of you and of course remember the black Volvo wagon my dad bought from you. It was one of the first cars I drove. Thank you also for sharing the ... more story of the 48 Special original rod that you have and for reaching out about finding it a new home. I agree that it is deserving of a special home. Unfortunately, I'm not in a financial position to buy any rods at this time. A good contact may be Wyatt Dietrich, who was one of my dad's students and friends and who has continued to build some of my dad's rods with my sister's and my permission. Wyatt is a very honest guy and may know of some people who would be interested in the rod. His e-mail is wyattdietrich@gmail.com. I can also reach out to a few of his friends who I've stayed in contact with to see if they are interested. My sister and I are lucky to have a number of my dad's rods and have thought about donating one to the Smithsonian as a tribute, but I have to look into it more to see if they would be interested.

Hey Yahna!! I'm not sure if you remember me. I was Hunter's son. I helped your dad move from the Kutztown house to the second, and ultimately the Shoemakersville house before I lost touch with your dad. I have one of his very special rods. I was unaware that he passed until just recently when I was speaking to my father. Back when your dad bought my Black Volvo wagon from me, he gave me one of his ... more finished prototypes that he was keeping for himself. I believe it to be the original .48 Special #001. I need to double check to make sure. He had said to me if I was ever to let it go to call him, and he would buy it back. I've held onto it all these years very closely and dearly. I really loved your dad, he was an awesome guy with a huge heart. My life has changed dramatically in recent years, and I only get to fish once, maybe twice a year. This rod never sees the light of day. Now that he's gone, I feel it needs to be somewhere special. If you would like to discuss it, feel free to shoot me an email! Again, I know its late....but I'm so sorry for your loss. I was blown away and a bit devastated to hear he was gone. I only wish I could have maintained more contact with him.

Yahna! So nice of you to drop by. Unfortunately, this rod sold some time ago. Still, it's good you stopped in - has anyone purchased George's rod company? I've been maintaining the Sweetwater Rod Company Web site as something of a remembrance of George, but if a new owner bought the rod company (as opposed to just the gear), then he should get the domain. Sorry for your loss, Tom Chandler

Hello Tom, I'm George Maurer's daughter and I found your post while looking around online. I have been looking for my Dad's rods that are for sale and may be interested in purchasing this one from you. Is the rod still available? Thank you!

I need a new job. On a different note, however, I read with great interest a story in The Spokesman-Review (Spokane, WA) about a man who forgot his rod on a trip to the St. Joe in Idaho and was successful using a stick rigged with paperclips. Here's a link: http://www.spokesmanreview.com/tools/story_pf.asp?ID=260923 So I'll try not to feel too bad that I can't afford a handmade bamboo rod. Sob.

That rod will appreciate in value! If I had the funds I'd snap it up and start a new career as a rod speculator.

Mike: I know it was the first Paradise Valley Special George made, and the odds are good it was also the last. Hate to let it go, but I've got too many, and I've discovered I like progressive tapers a bit more than the paras when I'm actually fishing.
