Astronomers Find Earthlike Planets: Underground Packs Bags

by Tom Chandler on June 19, 2008

I won’t lie; the idea of streams and lakes on other planets bursting with fish — that have never seen as much as a Royal Coachman — makes the Underground’s hair stand up (OK, technically I still have hair).

And while astronomers haven’t yet pinpointed the location of specific streams (I’ve got dibs on the first extra-terrestrial freestoner), they have found evidence suggesting the existence of “super-earths” orbiting another sun:

Yesterday they found three planets they called “super-Earths” orbiting a star that’s 42 light-years away from us. They found the planets by using clever tech — they can’t see the planets themselves, but measure the effect they have on a star, making it wobble with their gravity as they orbit.

Who’s got their travel rods ready? (Given the nature of the trip, I’m suggesting a Zero Gravity model.)

Still, I’m unsure of which flies to pack. The Space Wulff? Three-eyed Beetle Bug? Or just a lot of Cosmic Adams? Naturally, we’re accepting any and all suggestions from the Undergrounders.

See you in space, Tom Chandler.

Tom, Extra-terrestrial Rock Snot has particle beam weapons and death rays, you first …

It’ll be nice to be the invasive species for a change.

Whatever you pick, I’d go a size or two smaller than the Earth version…the gravity associated with these larger “super-earths” may limit the size of any invertebrates. The question is, will the wings be relatively larger or smaller to compensate for the higher weight-to-mass ratio or denser atmosphere, and how many pairs? Make sure you bring odd-number appendaged versions as well. Let me know how it goes.

Ed: Anybody who watches the many fact-based documentaries on the SciFi channel knows alien bugs are much bigger than those on earth (it’s proven).

I’m planning to try out the Tribble Haired Caddis - the “catch and pluck” version, not the “catch and kill” variety.

Would you tie those flies on with a cosmo-knot???

I will fill my George Jetson limited edition fly box with:

Clouser Deep Space Minnows
Dave’s Planet Hoppers
Pre-launch Czech Nymphs
Sulu Cougars
Parachute Piccards
Spent-wing Skywalkers
Royal Wookies
OB1’s
R2D2’s
SG1’s
X-wing Caddis
Bucktail Rogers
Intergalactic Streamers
Will Robinson’s Lost Leech
Tang-colored Spaceballs
and a copious amount of Conehead Buggers (of course)

I’m telling you, an EHC would work

Shasta: The Trouble With Tribbles is they sink.

AF: Excellent. You’re fired.

Ken: The “Tang Spaceball” has a certain ring, doesn’t it. Plus for everyone who grew up during the Apollo era, it even has a certain taste.

Salty: You jerk. The aliens are going to think we’re a bunch of bohemian presentationists, and kick us out.

tom,

some folks say that tang spaceballs aren’t “real flies.” i just giggle to myself and think, “what fish are eating is what fish are eating whether or not it’s a bug, a worm, a shrimp, another fish, or some fish’s eggs. who am i to judge?”

Tom,

As a serious amateur astronomer and disinterested party (me and fish don’t mix), I felt I needed to help you by pointing out some of the “little details” you’ll need to consider for your trip.

First off, it’s about 481 years, 7 months, 22 days, 9 hours and 53 minutes (give or take a skosh) from here to there. Assuming a certain profile for acceleration, of course. So be sure to take your Geritol along, and let LTN know you won’t be home for dinner.

Also, you’ll need to take your shoe lifts and hernia trusses; the gravity once you get there will be a wee tad stressful.

Finally, I hope you’ve sold the majority of your assets to fund the craft and the fueling fees. Although LOX and liquid hydrogen haven’t gone up as much as gasoline, they’re still not cheap. And the parking fees are atrocious too.

Besides, you know the old saying: (Wait for it)

There’s no such thing as a free launch…
