We’re back at the home of the Trout Underground’s Anonymous Director of Freeloader Montana Fly Fisherman Housing - unexpectedly so.
The fly fishing on Rock Creek has been excellent; the trout were jumping on our Golden Stone dries non-stop.
Yesterday found me holding my first pure-strain Westslope Cutthroat (pretty thing) in the net. Today it was non-stop [...]

The aging Toyota (and the aging person driving it) made the 13.5 hour trip to Missoula in great shape.
Though I’d love to describe the effort in terms that elevate it to the level of crossing the prarie in a Conestoga wagon, the truth is rather simpler; I just drove a lot.
In the west — where [...]

With literally billions of our tax dollars being spent to recover salmon in the Columbia River basin — and populations continuing their downward spiral (Coho are essentially extinct in the system) - you have to wonder how long this will continue before the Snake River dams come down.
So does CBS News, who ran a solid [...]

With the Montana Road Trip looming large through the windshield, it’s hard to ignore the fact that half of Northern California’s on fire, though at this point none seem to be headed our way:

By the end of the week I’ll be Montana bound, a bundle of fly rods on the front seat, a duffel of equipment in the truck bed.
Assuming my ancient Toyota econobox pickup survives the 14 hour trip, this coming weekend could find me scoring heavy on big trout with big, big dries (hint: stonefly sized).
The [...]

Just this once, if your fishing buddy says he hooked “a real submarine” and that “he couldn’t stop it,” he might be telling the truth (might).
From the Aquafornia blog:
If you reel in a small sub instead of a rainbow trout from the Sacramento River this summer, don’t call Homeland Security. It belongs [...]

Sent to us by the folks hoping to turn the Pending Pebble Mine Disaster into a distant memory, the stunning, oh-so eco-friendly ad below has been prepared by the Pebble Partnership - the companies who want to turn Bristol Bay into toxic waste site (though a profitable one for them).
The Pebble Partnership’s hoping to reassure [...]
