In what amounts to a blatant commercial plug for a friend, I’m passing along an idea for a Father’s Day fly fishing getaway: why not rent a comfortable little house in Dunsmuir, enjoy the restaurants, and fish your damned brains out?
The house is comfy and yes — he’s even got a special Father’s Day Deal.
And look for more posts in this vein; we’re going to take a look at some of the places to stay, play and eat around the Upper Sacramento River (with an emphasis on funky and friendly).

Great idea, and done in a non-spammy way. For someone not familiar with the Dunsmuir/Shasta area renting a place for the weekend could be a crapshoot.

KJE: I try very hard to avoid conflicts of interest here (providing favorable editorial coverage in return for freebies — which almost never happens outside of books); I’ve got no stake in this home rental, and think it’s a cool place.
SMJ: I’ve gotta get my “Fishing & Eating in Dunsmuir” series up and running. There’s just so damned little time.
Dunsmuir only has two groceries (USA & Alpine). The Alpine is a little more upscale, and it’s on the main drag north of the Freeway overpass. As for bakeries, you’re somewhat SOL. The old Gandy Dancer made the best baked goods, and rumor has it the same chef is opening a new place near the Ted Fay Fly Shop.

The real culinary jewel of Dunsmuir, TC won’t let me talk about … Just this once, as it’s SMJ asking – I’ll “drop dime”..
The Chevron Mini Mart just below the Alpine is a magnet for fine dining. They have three kinds of Teriyaki Beef Jerky; sealed, room temperature, and dusty. I stock up everytime I’m in the area.
